SDL is seeking an Imaging Sensor and Detector technical subject matter expert. This engineer is responsible for supporting current space sensor projects with detector selection, interface engineering, subcontract technical management, integration, test planning and execution for EO/IR instrumentation and sensor systems. Additionally, they will provide guidance and leadership across the lab on new technologies and maturation of these technologies keeping SDL at the forefront of remote sensing and instrumentation in space.  They must have the ability to understand the science driven requirements and work with the team to translate into a technical solution, work with program management to ensure technical requirements and performance are achieved, support interactions with customers, and provide technical support to related proposal efforts.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a related technical field (e.g., systems engineering, optical science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or physics)
  • 7+ years of relevant detector engineering experience or an advanced degree
  • Knowledge of detector physics and operation, including related disciplines (Optics, Electronics, Image Analysis, Performance Modeling, etc)   
  • Familiarity with EO instruments, subsystems design and supportive radiometric analysis
  • Ability to learn quickly, Excellent communication skills, ability to work well with multidisciplinary engineering staff
  • Ability to present clearly and succinctly to customers
  • Proficiency understanding requirements, flowing down requirements, tracking requirements, and verification of requirements
  • Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain a US government security clearance
  • Must be able to travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in a related technical field (e.g., systems engineering, optical science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or physics)
  • 10+ years of relevant detector engineering experience
  • In-depth familiarity with EO instruments, systems/subsystem requirements and designs
  • In-depth understanding of detector physics and operation, including related disciplines (Optics, Electronics, Image Analysis, Performance Modeling, etc)   
  • Proficient in radiometric analysis of optical systems including a deep understanding of detector and electrical noise
  • Experience with sensor development, implementation, and testing including testing of detector effects such as linearity, brighter-fatter effect and Detector MTF influence
  • Experience with proposal and early concept development for NASA and military opportunities
  • Experience with NASA system engineering and risk management principles
  • Understanding of requirements, processes, and risk classifications for spaceflight missions
