Summary:

The Imaging Assistant assists the Imaging Technologists with basic patient care, transportation and clerical duties within assigned department. Imaging Assistants are responsible for making a good first impression of the department to our patients. Performs all tasks in accordance with applicable assigned department protocols.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma required
  • Good computer/keyboarding skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ideal for a medical imaging student who wants to work in their chosen field while finishing their education.

License or Certification Requirements:

CPR

Responsibilities:

  • Using AIDET, Greets and escorts patients in and out of the scan rooms.
  • Transports patients to and from ED, central waiting, and other areas within the hospital to facilitate patient flow and seamless care. Utilizes patient safe transfer equipment as applicable
  • Gives a brief explanation to the patient of what is to be expected as far as what type of scan the patient will be having and how long it will take.
  • Introduces patient to the technologist and does a warm hand-off.
  • Correctly uses patient lifting aides and assists in moving patients from cart, bed, or wheelchair to scan table using proper body mechanics.
  • Positions patients comfortably on the Scan Table, using pillows and wedges under the patient’s knees, and offers a blanket. Collects eyeglasses, hearing aids, and other personal items for safe keeping and return to the patient at the end of their exam.
  • Connects patient to Oxygen if required for continuation of existing orders.
  • Practices Standard Precautions for all patient contact, using hand sanitizer gel, washing hands, and wearing gloves. Wears gowns, and masks when appropriate.
  • Obtains a thorough medical history from patient and enters information into EPIC. Communicates patient history with technologists.
  • Follows radiation safety practices for patient, self, and co-workers within department as appropriate.
  • Makes sure the order corresponds to exactly what the Radiologist has protocolled to be done. If not, alerts the technologist and EDITS the order in EPIC if instructed to do so by the Technologist.
  • Checks for lab results, Pregnancy Test results, Iodine allergies and alerts the technologist for any potential problems before proceeding with the scan.
  • Checks for previous imaging for comparison and alerts the technologist if the patient has had the same exam recently in case the Radiologist must be notified for an approval.
  • May Under the Direct Supervision of the technologist, enter information into EPIC regarding IV starts, Assessments, and Removals with verbal readback.
  • May Under the Direct Supervision of the technologist, enter orders for the appropriate contrast with verbal read back, as well as I-STATs with results.
  • Cleans and resets room for next patient.
  • Answers and returns telephone calls from the ED, The Floors, the Scheduling department, other modalities, and doctor's offices, patients, etc.
  • Enters the patient's history into the Vision, EPIC, Onpage, and/or Telerad Webservers.
  • Prints out the Vision Preliminary Reading Report and scans them into both EPIC and PACs.
  • Prepares image studies for external sharing for ER patients who are being transferred to another facility.
  • During brief periods when there are no patients ready to come to the department, the Assistant helps the technologist with straightening up the department, disinfecting keyboards, telephones, changing out the laundry and garbage bags, restocking the rooms, putting away supplies, etc.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Speech: Required to communication with patient, retrieval of information, procedure verification and post-procedure routing, nursing units.
Vision: Same as above including reading physician's order slip, identify patient to computer system and enter procedure.
Smell: Helpful to note presence of electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Needed for hearing patient, answer questions from patient/family.
Touch: Needed to write, computer entry, filing.

Help lift patients into/out of wheelchairs. Able to lift stacks of radiographic jackets and carry to file room. Reach above their head for top shelf. Need to lift boxes of paper when rethreading printers and lifting report holders from above cabinets, carried for approximately 10'. May also need to assist patients from wheelchair on to and off of procedure tables.
