Hydrogeologist - Professional Scientist/Assistant BPPF

Duties:
The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG), Montana's state geologic survey, seeks one or more highly motivated hydrogeologists to work in the Ground Water Investigation Program (GWIP). The position is based in Butte, Montana and located on the campus of Montana Technological University. GWIP evaluates local- to regional-scale hydrogeologic systems, with studies that encompass groundwater/surface-water interactions, water availability and storage, and groundwater quantity and quality. The successful candidate(s) may also support the Ground Water Assessment Program (GWAP) and other hydrogeologic projects conducted at the MBMG.
Primary duties will be the collection and analysis of hydrogeologic, geochemical, and geologic data to develop interpretations of hydrogeologic frameworks, groundwater flow systems, and groundwater quality. These interpretations will be compiled into maps, reports, and groundwater flow models. Tasks include planning and assisting with work plan development and field activities such as: measuring groundwater levels; collecting water quality samples; design and supervision of monitor well installation; planning and execution of aquifer tests; geologic mapping; and stream gaging. A successful candidate will be expected to work individually and as part of a team to collect hydrogeologic data, write reports and develop map products; make presentations at public and scientific meetings; and answer public inquiries. A successful candidate will be required to travel throughout Montana including overnight stays up to a week.
This is a non-tenurable, non-teaching position. Employer sponsorship of work visas is not available.
Required Qualifications:

  • Professional Scientist: Bachelor's Degree in hydrogeology, geology or related field and 3 years relevant experience or Master's Degree in hydrogeology, geology or related field obtained by May 2024
  • Assistant Hydrogeologist: Master's Degree in hydrogeology, geology, or related field and 3 years relevant experience or Doctorate obtained by May 2024
  • College-level course work in geology and hydrogeology, must include a list of relevant courses in your resume
  • Applicable hydrogeologic/geologic field experience.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • A valid Montana driver's license (or ability to acquire one).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A record of publication and/or authored reports, presentations, or other formal communication that demonstrates strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience with hydrologic applications of GIS analysis and other specialized computational methods such as R, Python, MODFLOW or similar applications.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of and experience with groundwater modeling and/or geochemical, surface water, and watershed modeling.
  • Familiarity with conducting aquifer tests and analyzing the data.
  • Familiarity with surface-water monitoring and discharge measurements using a variety of instruments, rating curve development.
  • Drilling experience including logging and completing wells.
  • Familiarity with water-level and field water-quality instruments, data loggers, and GPS receivers.
  • Experience in synthesizing, interpreting, and managing hydrogeologic, geochemical and/or geophysical data.
  • Ability to self-manage time and effectively complete tasks.
  • Familiarity with the geology and hydrogeology of Montana.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work safely alone in isolated areas, be able to lift 50 lbs., and walk up to 2 miles carrying equipment.
