About the Opportunity
West Virginia University's (WVU) Health Affairs Institute (Health Affairs) is seeking candidates for a full-time Technical Writer. The person in this position applies expert knowledge and Health Affairs Style Guide to ensure the high quality of all outward-facing products of Health Affairs. The Technical Writer should be detail-oriented, have excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and page composition skills, and ideally be familiar with scientific peer-review publishing practices.
The Health Affairs Institute serves as the coordinating office for WVU's State-University partnership with the WV Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) and conducts research, evaluation, and technical assistance projects for WV DHHR. In that role, Health Affairs staff produce a wide array of products, such as reports, briefs, infographics, training manuals, survey questionnaires, proposals to DHHR, conference presentations, journal manuscripts, social media posts, and other products to disseminate project information and research findings to a wider audience. The focus areas of Health Affairs' work include behavioral health, health information services, population health, workforce development, home- and community-based services, and Medicaid services.

What you'll do:
  • Lead the development and updating of Health Affairs standard editorial guidelines, collaborating with Health Affairs leadership and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with Health Affairs Leadership team and Portfolio Directors to improve the quality of how information is communicated with partners at West Virginia University, client organizations, and the public.
  • Lead the establishment and maintain product requirements, review processes, and standards for Health Affairs, collaborating with Health Affairs leadership
  • Develop and maintain Health Affairs templates for internal and external use.
  • Develop and implement plans to improve systems, processes, and products.
  • Build relationships and work with internal and external customers to gather and provide feedback for enhancements and knowledge development.
  • Establish and maintain frequently asked questions (FAQ) to assist technical and programmatic staff.
  • Participate in continuous quality assurance improvement activities and projects and assists in creating a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Assist Health Affairs Marketing and Communication team as needed on internal and external materials.
  • Collaborate with Health Affairs Leadership and Marketing and Communication team to enhance the efficiency of the quality review system and process.
  • Participate with Health Affairs staff in writing technical documents including, but not limited to, project proposals, reports, grants, and promotional materials.
  • Consult with Health Affairs staff, partners, and stakeholders to determine the most effective medium of communication.
  • Apply knowledge of public health, population health, and social and behavioral science to assist Health Affairs staff in constructing clear, concise, and accurate language targeted to different audiences.
  • Ensure high quality of Health Affairs deliverables and products by providing tailored, written edits to improve understanding by the anticipated users of deliverables and products.
  • Ensure that documents adhere to Health Affairs Style Guide and brand standards.
  • Assist with the submission and review process of articles, presentations, briefs, and other scientific products.
  • Provide final editing and editorial approval of project deliverables and scientific products intended for peer review and/or public presentation including, but not limited to, conference abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations, so that products are grammatically correct.
  • Strategize with Health Affairs Leadership to enhance the efficiency of the Dissemination quality review system and process.
  • Develop and deliver training to Health Affairs staff related to improving technical writing skills as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience is required
  • Two (2) years experience: Technical Editor in applied science context.
  • Preferred experience:
    • Experience in web coding
    • Experience editing written materials related to topic areas noted above;
    • Experience in grant writing;
    • Experience in marketing communication
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and page composition skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite applications, in particular InDesign
  • Familiarity with scientific peer-review publishing practices
  • Preferred - knowledge of concepts related to public health research and evaluation
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Ability to project and maintain a positive and collaborative attitude.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

The ability to travel to WVUs regional campuses and/or within the multi-state area is required.
