The West Virginia University Cancer Institute is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Senior Program Manager.
About the Opportunity
As a (Hybrid) Senior Program Manager, you will be responsible for 1) performing highly technical and complex research and evaluation activities in the field of cancer prevention and control with a specific emphasis in cancer communication science, 2) providing expertise in knowledge translation and dissemination science to support the research to practice pipeline, and 3) managing the Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Lab within the WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC). You will gain practical experience in health communication, mixed methods research, social listening, knowledge translation, and dissemination science. There will be regular communication with diverse internal and external partners. You will be charged with maintaining these relationships while enhancing collaboration with other strategic partners including community members, researchers, public health programs, clinical practices, and academic institutions. This is a highly specialized role that seeks to blend research, public health practice, and management skills and experience in a unique position to advance the field of cancer communication science in Appalachia.

What you'll do:
Research Focus
  • Conduct research and evaluation activities using independent judgement in applying or adapting scientific techniques to accomplish research and grant deliverables.
  • Facilitate the planning, direction, and execution of specific segments of a research project.
  • Investigate and recommend alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.
  • Provide training and support to entry level research specialists, students, and program coordinators.
  • Design, implement, and maintain data collection tools and summarize data collection processes, procedures, and activities.
  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Disseminate research and evaluation findings nationally, regionally, and locally through published manuscripts, presentations, research briefs, and other reports.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance IRBs to ensure data protection and research activities follow best practice, are conducted ethically, and are compliant with university-level, as well as national and state level policies for the responsible conduct of research.
  • Operate a highly technical social listening platform by routinely developing queries, training platform artificial intelligence, and analyzing data reports from multiple dashboards.

Dissemination/Knowledge Translation Focus
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external researchers, partners, and collaborators.
  • Advise collaborators on knowledge translation and dissemination strategies.
  • Implement knowledge translation and dissemination science plans developed for each collaborator.
  • Develop knowledge products based on collaborator/intended audience needs using appropriate software and evidence-based knowledge translation and dissemination science theories and frameworks.
  • Track collaborator project progress to ensure routine access to CHATS Lab services.
  • Promote knowledge translation and dissemination science strategies to benefit WVUCI students, researchers, and clinicians through presentations, training sessions, and written resources.
  • Prepare and deliver outreach strategies to promote CHATS Lab services to potential collaborators.

Lab Management Focus
  • Supervise student interns and research volunteers.
  • Build and maintain research study tracking through Microsoft Planner.
  • Build and maintain CHATS Lab performance metric tracking through Microsoft Planner.
  • Manage CHATS Lab budgets and supply orders.
  • Manage CHATS Lab online presence (e.g., HSC Directory, social media profiles, website).
  • Facilitate regular CHATS Lab meetings.
  • Seek grant funding to further research opportunities and assist with grant applications.
  • Provide routine operations updates to the CHATS Lab Director and/or other CPC senior leaders.

Other Duties
  • Pursue regular professional development in health communication, social media, research methods, dissemination science, and knowledge translation, to develop and maintain needed expertise.
  • Provide support and expertise to existing funded programs within CPC, including evaluation, data interpretation, grant writing assistance, and dissemination.
  • Conduct or direct special projects as assigned by the CHATS Lab Director or Director of CPC.
  • Function as a team member of CPC. Assist with other CPC program activities as requested by senior leaders.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in health-related field such as public health, community health, health/education, implementation science, behavioral science, or another relevant field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience involving:
  • Health-related research or evaluation and working collaboratively with internal and external partners.
  • Health-related health communication and social media.
  • Research and/or public health dissemination.
  • Demonstrates ability and experience in health-related research and evaluation techniques.
  • Conducts strategic planning for research program development.
  • Conducts mixed methods research.
  • Develops action plans and systems to facilitate and track research/implementation activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing people.
  • Prepares manuscripts and abstracts for publication and conference presentation.
  • Participates fully in research and administrative meetings.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and other researchers/practitioners.
  • Interacts well with individuals of all levels and backgrounds.
  • Writes and edits clearly and informatively, varies style to meet needs, and presents/interprets data for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepares reports and present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Works independently, exercising judgement.
  • Demonstrates and understanding of institutional, federal, and state statutes and regulations impacting the work.
  • Handles a high level of detail.
  • Maintains proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationship and deals tactfully with departments, organizational units, related programs, and external agencies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply HR policies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with general computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, database management software, internet search engines, REDCap, Qualtrics, and biostatistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Atlas Ti, NVivo), deign software (e.g., Canva, Illustrator), and social listening platforms (e.g., Brandwatch).

  • Valid US driver's license.
