Summary/Objective

Under the direction of and reporting to the Crew Leader, the HVAC Technician will be responsible for improving the energy efficiency and sustainability of our clients’ homes and will assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and equipment as part of weatherization projects. This role will contribute to reducing energy consumption, enhancing indoor comfort, and minimizing environmental impact. This position routinely handles highly sensitive and/or confidential information and will represent CEDA in a variety of capacities. Must demonstrate good judgment, an ability to be approachable and professional, solid problem solving skills, an ability to handle multiple tasks, an ability to be self-motivated and well organized, and maintain strict confidentiality.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with weatherization project managers and team members to execute mechanical aspects of weatherization projects, including HVAC system installations and upgrades, duct sealing, and installation of energy-efficient equipment.
  • Assist in conducting assessments and audits of mechanical systems in buildings to identify energy efficiency opportunities and areas for improvement.
  • Install and maintain energy-efficient mechanical systems, such as furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioning units, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
  • Perform repairs and upgrades to mechanical components, including motors, fans, pumps, ductwork, and controls, to enhance energy efficiency and system performance.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests, measurements, and analysis of mechanical systems to identify and resolve issues related to energy efficiency, air quality, and comfort.
  • Collaborate with other crew members to ensure proper integration of mechanical systems with overall weatherization efforts.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment and minimize risks associated with mechanical installations and repairs.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on projects.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulations related to mechanical systems and energy efficiency to continuously enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Understand and comply with all Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) compliance, regulations, policies, and procedures. As well as all CEDA internal and operational procedures
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven experience in mechanical installations, repairs, or maintenance, preferably in HVAC systems.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems, including heating, cooling, ventilation, and controls.
  • Knowledge of Home Performance, energy-efficient practices, technologies, and equipment related to mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools, instruments, and meters used in assessing mechanical system performance.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, diagrams, and specifications.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, verbally and in writing.
  • Solid decision making and analytical abilities.
  • Highly developed sense of integrity and commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to analyze problems and determine the best solutions using creative problem solving skills.
  • Must maintain strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask and understand new technologies quickly.
  • Experience maintaining, energy auditing, or evaluating multifamily buildings.
  • General background in basic carpentry skills, on-the-job experience preferred.
  • Must be self-disciplined, showing initiative and displaying good judgment.
  • Must have knowledge and experience gathering and analyzing quantitative and qualitative performance data.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Positive interpersonal and collaboration skills dealing effectively with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Ability to work effectively with a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment and represent CEDA professionally.
  • Computer literate; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment/ Travel

This job operates ninety percent of the time in the Field. The work conditions may vary as the time of year delivers varying weather conditions (extreme heat, high humidity, damp, wet, and extreme cold). This role requires the use of standard equipment such as: Gas Sniffers, Combustion Analyzers, Infrared Cameras, and Cameras, Manometers, Blower Doors, HVAC equipment required for testing and installations, and hand tools, computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Travel of distance is required, especially suburban Cook County. Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and auto insurance that meets State requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; kneel; bend; crawl; climb ladders; work on roofs; carry equipment; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and use equipment, tools and other materials; reach with hands and arms; frequent input data into a computer system device, repetitive motion; balance; or stoop; crawl; work in small areas; hearing/talking on the telephone and in person. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Expected Hours of Work/Travel

This is a support level position requiring the exercise of discretion and judgment and is required to work a full-time work week, as designated by the CEDA Employee Handbook, with periodic longer hours, including potential evenings, weekends, and odd hours.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and minimum 1-3 years experience related to position as described.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance that meets State requirements.
  • Must be Building Performance Institute EA certified or become certified after participating in training given by the State of Illinois and CEDA within one year of employment.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) Energy Auditor (EA) Certification preferred.
  • Hands-on construction experience working with energy modeling software;
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Operator Certification.
  • Related Building Performance Certifications and Experience.
  • Valid EPA 608 Type II certification for handling and recovering refrigerants preferred.
