JOB SUMMARY
The HVAC Mechanic monitors, repairs, overhauls, and maintains all refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, sewage, compressed air (air dryer systems), steam, allied equipment and miscellaneous plant equipment. The HVAC Mechanic may be asked to monitor the work of contractors performing HAVC type work to ensure the work is performed safely, within code, and efficiently. This position requires a "Universal" Refrigeration (EPA) License. The HVAC Mechanic will also be required to do multi-craft tasks, such as, but not limited to, painting, light plumbing, carpentry, and moving equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

  1. Operate and maintain plant HVAC systems (e.g. air conditioning, refrigeration, humidification, heating) air dryers, boilers, vacuum, fire protection, and plumbing/sewage systems.
  2. Operate and maintain plant Compressed air systems (e.g. Rotary Screw, Centrifugal, Desiccant dryers)
  3. Work from drawings, blueprints, sketches, specification and plans.
  4. Make decisions related to the replacement of parts or repairs of equipment with little to no supervision.
  5. Document scheduled and unscheduled work performed.
  6. Initiate requisitions for replacement parts.
  7. Maintain an excellent working relationship with customers, occupants, and users of HVAC services.
  8. Respond to all types of maintenance and plant emergencies during normal and non-work hours.
  9. Perform safely checks of fire water sprinkler Systems.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
  11. Available to be on the Emergency On-Call Rotation

HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Be aware of and follow the Environmental Policy and EH&S work instructions/procedures that apply to the job.
  • Perform every job safely, for the benefit of self, co-workers, contractors, and for the protection of facilities. This includes the use of required personal protective equipment and use of safety equipment/devices, guarding, as well as safe work practices.
  • Immediately report every job-related injury or illness, regardless of severity, to a team leader/supervisor.
  • Assist in investigating accidents as directed by your supervisor.
  • Take necessary actions to correct or stop any unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings and training.
  • Review Safety Data Sheet instructions before working with any chemical product.
  • Maintain work area in safe condition by ensuring the work area is clean and orderly.
  • May also be required to assist with:
      • labeling and dating hazardous waste containers;
      • notifying HSES Engineer of all waste that has been placed in waste shed;
  • transferring hazardous waste from satellite accumulation points to the hazardous waste accumulation sheds;
  • responding to spills in your specific work area involving hazardous waste;
  • assist with picking up lab pack hazardous waste items from laboratories, MRO, etc., and transporting to waste contractors truck location for packing (must be forklift certified);
  • assisting with removal of hazardous waste from sheds (using forklift only) to assist transport contractors.

QUALITY ASSURANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Accurately and timely complete all Quality checks and properly document.
  • Colleagues are responsible for their own quality and that of colleagues within their span of control.
  • Colleagues are responsible to follow all established Quality procedures and instructions.
  • Notify supervision for corrective action if and when defects are found and/or parts/processes do not conform to specifications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
  • Education:
    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Experience:
    • Five years minimum experience required in HVAC Maintenance and Repair Field
  • OtherRequired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Proof of a current "Universal" Refrigeration (EPA) License
    • Requires knowledge sufficient to deal with complicated and involved mechanical, electrical or other involved problems including complete programming, troubleshooting, and repair of controllers used on computerized equipment.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Communicates well with customers, fellow workers, and supervisor.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and develop a plan of action to isolate equipment for repairs.
    • Responsible for training and leading others in completing assigned tasks.
