Position Title: Human Trafficking Staff Attorney

The Alaska Institute for Justice (AIJ) is a nonprofit organization. Since opening our office in 2005, AIJ has been on the frontlines of promoting justice and equality of treatment for immigrants and refugees residing in Alaska. AIJ’s three programs protect, defend, and advance the rights of some of Alaska’s most underserved communities including: 1) Legal Program; 2) Language Interpreter Center; and 3) Research and Policy Institute.

About this Position: This is a full-time exempt position based in Anchorage Alaska dedicated to providing specialized legal services including immigration assistance, crime victims’ rights enforcement, navigating and understanding the criminal justice process and legal resources available to victims of Human Trafficking statewide.

The ideal candidate for this position must:

· possess excellent written and oral communication skills, self-confidence and be able to advocate on behalf of clients with compassion.

· dependable, be able to work with a team of co-workers in stressful situations and to work with people from diverse cultures whose first language is not English.

· be committed to providing legal representation to underserved immigrant and limited English proficient individuals and those normally excluded from the justice system.

QUALIFICATIONS

· J.D. degree required and licensed to practice law in the United States.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills and work experience with culturally diverse clients required.

· Previous work experience with domestic violence, sexual assault or Human Trafficking survivors, or non-profit legal services program and minimum two years legal experience is preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide immigration legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Alaska Court System, Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings.

2. Manage case files in accordance with program policy and procedures.

3. Work with paralegals and volunteers when they are assisting in your client-related work. Includes oversight of case management, telephone assistance and preparation of documents.

4. Meet deadlines imposed by state court judges, the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the Department of Homeland Security and the Supervising Attorney of the Alaska Immigration Justice Project.

5. Provide consultations and prescreen clients to review client eligibility for Human Trafficking services.

6. Participate in outreach and education activities to immigrant community, social service, legal services and health care providers and attorneys to increase awareness about Human Trafficking. Participate in Human Trafficking Task Force meetings.

7. When appropriate work with law enforcement officers to advocate for protection and safety for Human Trafficking clients.

8. Provide legal representation of Human Trafficking clients in other courts when material to immigration, family law and other legal issues related to the victimization of clients.

9. Assist domestic violence and sexual assault programs and other agencies working with Human Trafficking crime victims to make services accessible to underserved and limited English proficient trafficking survivors statewide.

10. Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate resource material for Human Trafficking victims, if needed.

11. Maintain case statistics for reports to funders.
