The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida's social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department's mission is to "work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency."

THIS ADVERTISEMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL CIVIL VACANCIES ON ALL SHIFTS AND UNITS.

 

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Human Services Supervisor I - SES. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • This is advanced professional work supervising and directing employees. The primary duty of the incumbent in this position is to spend the majority of their time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to effectively recommend actions such as: hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, promote, discharge, assign, and reward or discipline direct reports. Evaluates employees against established standards and takes appropriate actions when necessary (i.e. recognition, reward, corrective action, etc.).
  • Ensure all subordinates perform duties according to their position description and performance expectations. Nursing will provide guidance in the care and treatment of residents. Explain each expectation, reviewing listed operating procedures, document, etc. and using specific examples of expected behavior. Observe, document and provide feedback on performance of each expectation. Explain changes in operating procedures involving subordinate duties and ensure subordinates review required education. Review all documentation and provide feedback on accuracy. Observe staff conducting groups and ADL assessments and provide feedback on performance (day and evening shifts). Complete direct care supervisor checklists and provide feedback.
  • Ensure physically and emotionally safe and secure environment for people served and coworkers, observing: Unit wards or pods daily, looking for, documenting and reporting safety hazards and maintenance deficiencies; Subordinate interactions and interventions, looking for behavior (including appearance) that is respectful, professional, maintains dignity and supports recovery and teamwork; Subordinate interactions to ensure relationships are within the boundaries of a professional caregiver and don't develop into personal relationships; Subordinate interactions with coworkers to ensure a safe and professional work environment free of violence and harassment. Document and provide feedback to subordinates regarding interactions and interventions with people served and interactions with coworkers.
  • Ensure people served are supervised, advocated for and have access to all scheduled services; Assigned in direct care coverage daily; create a safe recovery environment through use of verbal and non-verbal communication and physical intervention skills; document factually and objectively; supervise employees; manage direct care procedures for respective ward/pod; prepare employee work schedules; review and observe employee performance and provide constructive verbal and written feedback; communicate and deploy information to subordinate employees in a manner the enables them to fulfill expected duties.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of health care or the behavioral sciences.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Ability to participate as a team member in the screening and admission of clients.
  • Ability to conduct inservice training in the areas of self-help, personal hygiene and resident living.
  • Ability to develop methods for reporting changes in clients' vital signs and behavior.
  • Ability to insure that safety precautions are implemented and hazards are removed.
  • Ability to identify and follow through on needed maintenance work.
  • Ability to coordinate the custodial upkeep and cleanliness of a unit.
  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of direct care experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.

 

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • Currently employed at Florida State Hospital.
  • One year of supervisory experience in a healthcare field.
