Job Description
Identifies patients at nutritional risk and refers them to clinical dietitian; assists in the provision of nutrition care to patients and families in conjunction with the clinical nutrition team, staff and physicians. Performs Clinical Nutrition Lab duties of both Human Milk and formula inventory, preparation, and delivery.

Job Responsibilities
  • Screens patients for nutrition risk using the hospital-approved electronic medical record within 24 hours using established risk criteria. Refers nutrition risk patients to clinical nutritionist per policy. Re-screens patients according to policy.
  • Performs clinical functions including calorie counts, nutrient analysis, formula and diet educations, and formula and Human Milk order verification and recipe entry.
  • Conducts calorie counts and nutrient analysis per policy.
  • Enters calorie count and nutrient analysis data into hospital approved electronic medical record.
  • Enters and verifies formula and Human Milk recipes ordered by provider into hospital approved electronic medical record.
  • Conducts other clinical functions under the supervision of a clinical nutritionist, including formula teaching, WIC prescriptions, and diet educations appropriate to the age, medical condition, outcome goals, and needs of the patient.
  • Follows inventory and stock procedures for Human Milk, nutritional formulas, and supplies according to policy.
  • Practices safe handling of expressed Human Milk and/or donor Human Milk per hospital policy and using aseptic technique. Receives Human Milk into the system, moves milk, and discharges milk. Prepares Human Milk orders by accurately measuring ingredients using gram scale, graduated cylinder, bead bath, and other Nutrition Lab equipment.
  • Demonstrates accuracy with Human Milk and formula calculations. Utilizes hospital approved software as needed for calculations and labels. Ensures that Human Milk software interfaces appropriately with hospital approved EMR. Able to implement downtime procedures to safely and accurately continue operations in the event of a system downtime.
  • Must pass Human Milk and Formula Handling and Calculations Competency test within 60 days of hire with >90% accuracy.
  • Communicates frequently and thoroughly with staff and caregivers to verify Human Milk quantities, clarify daily feeding order changes, and optimize usage of Human Milk while minimizing waste.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new clinical nutritionists, Nutrition Technicians, and formula technicians related to the Nutrition Technician position responsibilities.
  • Participates in on-going process improvement activities of the department.
  • Assists Formula Technician including coverage for the Formula Technician position and responsibilities as needed.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required.
