Household Supporter

Salary: $19.00/Hour

Position Overview
A Heartbeet household includes an amazing variety of individuals, each person with his or her own special needs and vocations, who together create each community home. Our common endeavor within each household is to create a secure, health-enhancing environment where individuals can meet, learn, and be nurtured on many different levels.

Mealtimes are central among the nurturing possibilities of Heartbeet home life. In most homes, three meals are shared on most days, prepared with complete, balanced nutrition and the specific needs and desires of individuals in mind. We also strive to make our homes warm and welcoming through aesthetic choices, including an environment of cleanliness and order, through celebration of birthdays and festivals, through friendly conversations, games, or music in the evenings. A Camphill house is also an excellent teaching space with many varied tasks for people with varied skill levels.

Reporting to the householder – and in regular communication with the householder- the Lifesharing Household Supporter is responsible for supporting the householder(s) to create this health-enhancing environment where everyone is recognized for their unique contributions.

The specific responsibilities of the Household Supporter, outlined below, enhance the ability of other Heartbeet coworkers to stay fully engaged in supporting daily work crews and studios, supports the efficient running of the household when volunteers have days off and broadens the householding team in ways that support all coworkers to focus their attention and awareness in productive ways while in the home.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support household activities as guided by the householder and the house schedule including meal preparation and clean up, evening social activities, and celebration of festivals, events, and birthdays.
2. Cleaning duties throughout the household.
3. Cooking meals as scheduled and per dietary guidelines.
4. Provide personal hygiene support to household members following the guidance of householders.
5. Early evening is an important time for social interaction in Camphill householders. Sharing your interests is a valuable contribution - whether that be reading a book aloud, practicing a musical instrument, sketching or a craft.
6. Communicate with householders when you observe something in the household needs repair or replacement.
7. Following guidance of householders, strive to meet the individual needs of household members, caring for the general social mood of the household and engaging household members to the fullest extent possible.
8. Participate in weekly household meetings if scheduling permits.
9. Ask questions about Heartbeet’s policies, protocols, and cultural life. Take responsibility to inquire if you don’t have all the information you need to be effective.

Health and Safety

• Ensures well-being and safety of staff and Friends by being knowledgeable of, and consistently adhering to relevant Vermont TCR (Therapeutic Community Residence) regulations.
• Ensures, in support of householder, that homes are clean and safe and provides recommendations concerning repairs, maintenance, renovations or improvements as appropriate.
• In cooperation with the Director of Licensing and Compliance, supports investigations of any home-based accidents and ensures completion of incident reports as required.
• Ensures that the Heartbeet Health and Safety Policies and Procedures are effectively implemented in the home.

Qualifications

• Valid U.S. Driver’s license.
• Clean background check.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, preferred but not required.
• Excellent verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
• Experience cooking with a focus on healthy eating and organic ingredients.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Positive attitude, reliable, flexible, and self-motivated.
• Two years Camphill experience preferred but not required.

Hours / Job Type: Full-Time Position: Monday – Friday. Potential flexibility for weekend hours. Preferred hours are 1:30pm – 8:30pm but traditional workday hours will be considered.

Compensation: $19.00 / hour
