Be Part of the Show at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts!
The Audio / Video Engineer in collaboration with and under the general direction of the Director of Production Services, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and installation of analog, digital audio, and event communications systems commonly used within large and medium sized theatres for all types of events; supervising and operating all performances of productions; attending tech/dress rehearsals and specified production meetings. Advancing and working with all traveling electrics technicians. In addition, The Audio / Video engineer will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and installation of portable video equipment including switchers, projectors and screens. This position is covered under the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between IATSE Local 321 and the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts.
Essential Functions:
  • Helps supervise the operation of the Audio department.
  • Acts as one of the primary Audio Engineers for most events.
  • Mixes Audio for events.
  • Responsible for the preventative and reactive maintenance as required on all Straz Center audio and communications equipment.
  • Provides recommendations to the Production Manager on an ongoing basis regarding modifications and upgrades to audio and event communications systems.
  • Serves as liaison between audio designers, visiting Audio Engineers.
  • Maintains professional currency with respect to industry trends and standards in the operation of audio, event communications, and related equipment.
  • Maintains an inventory of all necessary spare parts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
  • The nature of this job requires that the employee work on-site.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and develop staff and effectively relate to staff, peers, and clients.
  • Working knowledge of a Yamaha CL5 Digital Console.
  • Working knowledge of Dante Audio Interface.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.

Education and Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in technical theatre field or 5 years' experience as a head or assistant Audio Engineer at a major performing arts center, large scale touring show, or other professional performing arts institution.

  • Ability to work long hours and work with a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
  • Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Work regularly requires walking, bending and climbing; approximately 50% of performance facility is reachable only by stairs or ladder.
  • Ascend and descend narrow ladders between floors backstage.
  • Some work may be completed in low light areas and/or areas of restricted access.
  • Position occasionally requires work in areas where hazardous materials (e.g. spray paint or cleansers) are present.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting, bending, standing, climbing, and walking.
