The Fire Systems Technician III serves as the lead for the local fire systems team. This position is responsible for driving the execution for maintenance, installation, repair, testing, and inspection of Fire Systems and equipment for Medxcel throughout the work location of Borgess Medical Center- Kalamazoo, MI.  She/he is the subject matter expert on Fire Systems and will ensure the team and facility meets national, state, and local regulatory requirements.    


Fire systems System Management 

 

  • Provides direction for Fire and Fire Systems Technicians I and II in performing preventive and routine maintenance on campus fire detection/alarms, battery operated emergency lighting systems, and fire suppression systems to include dry pipe, wet pipe, pre-actions, deluge, FM200, kitchen fire suppression, smoke evacuation, and other fire systems 
  • Monitors and maintains the operation and integrity of fire and fire systems 
  • Troubleshoots and corrects complex problems with all fire systems to include fire detection/alarm, fire suppression systems, fire pumps, fire systems troubles and Fire Alarms response. Also, conducts follow up investigations to determine the cause of fire systems alarms and to ensure/verify the proper operation of fire and fire systems 
  • Installs fire detection and suppression system devices 
  • Performs code required maintenance, testing and inspections of facility fire and fire systems, also assists and directs contractors with required fire and Fire systems inspections and with correction all resulting deficiencies. 
  • Completes departmental reports and documentation to include gathering data through field measurements and observations, analysis and various research methods 
  • Reads and interprets blue prints, schematics and specifications to maintain functionality of campus systems, ensure compliance, provide plan reviews and input for campus projects. 
  • Conducts quality control inspection for work completed by Fire systems Technician I, IIs, and contractors 
  • Assist or lead the maintenance, repair, and installation of any Fire systems and equipment.  
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date as-built drawings for all fire systems, including, fire suppression systems, fire/smoke dampers and fire/smoke construction.     
  • Investigates fire systems code compliance issues and performs follow-up communications, actions and documentation. 
  • Accompanies local and state fire inspectors during campus inspections. 

 

Fire systems System Testing and Inspection

 

  • Investigates fire systems code compliance issues and performs follow-up communications, actions and documentation. 
  • Reports deficiencies after each inspection. 
  • Inspects fire systems equipment in facility. 
  • Inspect and test all types of fire suppression systems. Inspect and test all types of fire protection and prevention components such as; fire/smoke dampers, fire/smoke barriers and doors. 
  • Inspect and test all types of Fire Alarm systems, including programming. Periodically tests Fire Alarms, fire detection systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lights and exit lights. 

 

Special Projects

 

  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned. 
  • Participates in the commissioning of new and retrofitted building controls and fire systems to ensure compliance and systems integrity. 
  • Conducts self-study and attends training to maintain and improve technical proficiency in fire and fire systems to include all applicable codes. 
  • Trains associates on fire and fire systems. 
  • Assist and participate in special projects as assigned 

 

Leadership

 

  • Provides leadership to Fire systems Technicians I and II’s including daily work management.  
  • Actively manage staff and assure that each is treated with respect and fairness and that each is provided with tools and knowledge to perform their duties.  
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment; ensure team members are adequately equipped to perform their duties and responsibilities.  

Education: 

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Technical associates degree or certificate in electronics, fire systems NICET II, and Fire Inspector) or electrical trade 
  • NFPA course work and certifications on applicable (NFPA 13, 20, 25, 72, 96, 17, and 17A) 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred

 

License/Certification: 

 

  • Trade License in Fire Alarm, Electrical or Plumbing 
  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 1 certification in Fire Protection Engineering, Inspecting and Testing of Water Based Fire Suppression Systems or Fire Alarm Systems 
  • Continuation of applicable track - NICET Level 2 certification in Fire Protection Engineering, Inspecting and Testing of Water Based Fire Suppression Systems or Fire Alarm Systems 
  • Valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to be insured for driving company vehicles as applicable to duties 

 

Experience: 

 

  • Eight years’ experience in fire protection systems  
  • Experience with testing, inspections, installation and maintenance of fire/smoke suppression, detection and containment systems is required 
  • Experience with Simplex Information Management System software/computer, Siemens Apogee Insight software/computer and decibel meter
  • Specific knowledge and experience Simplex and Siemens Fire Alarms System. Also, possess essential knowledge of building operations to include HVAC controls and utilities systems 
  • Six years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of Fire Alarm and/or fire protection systems or 
  • Experience in healthcare industry preferred

  • Have a working knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and life safety requirements.  
  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials standards

  • Quality:  Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; seek ways to improve and promote quality 
  • Computer skills:  Understanding and experience with the use of basic Windows program and Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Word and Outlook Email   
  • Knowledge of instrumentation troubleshooting and preventative maintenance is required   
  • Knowledge of current facility code and regulatory requirements for fire/smoke suppression, detection and containment systems is required. Superb communication skills for employee interactions such as, providing directions, training, feedback, etc. are required
  • Strong analytical abilities for understanding and interpreting building system documents, prints and layouts are required. 
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment with a skill level that is typically acquired through trade and/or vocational schools. 
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of electronics, Fire Alarms, fire suppression, and related equipment. Motorized carts and vehicles. Personal computer, standard office equipment. And Multi-meter, and hand tools
