Schedule: 10:00 AM- 6:30 PM, Monday - Friday
SUMMARY OF POSITION: The courier is responsible for obtaining blood specimens with speed and dispatch outside and in the hospital. The phlebotomist will process and transport specimens and reports to and from the client and/or hospital and perform all associated clerical duties.
FUNCTIONS:
1. Will perform off-site assignments as assigned by the Department Director.
2. Have a valid Class E driver license or able to acquire.
3. Responsible for delivery of supplies, laundry, medications and vaccines, and mail to off-site clinics as necessary.
4. Consistently adheres to hospital and/or departmental policies and procedures.
6. Retrieves specimens from MDMC clinics and receives them into the EMR upon returning to the lab.
7. Maintains logs of specimens received from each clinic.
8. Process samples as required (centifugation, refrigeration, frozen, etc).
9. Responsible for maintaining infection control and hazardous materials according to hospital and departmental policy and returning waste in impermeable container to MDMC Lab.
10. Retrieves outgoing mail, cash payments, and soiled laundry from clinics and delivers them to the appropriate area of the hospital.
11. Returns to the hospital promptly upon completion of duties outside the hospital.
12. Routes all forms and specimens as appropriate.
13. Seeks to expand professional knowledge and practice.
14. Follows all applicable traffic and safety laws when operating the MDMC courier vehicle.
15. Communicates any concerns about the courier vehicle to the department director or facilities management.
16. Returns receipt for fuel purchased to department director.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Previous office training or experience, including clerical skills and basic computer skills, preferred.
SPECIAL:
BIOHAZARD CONTACT: The courier will be in contact with patient specimens and soiled laundry which should be handled using universal precautions.
CHEMICALS: The phlebotomist is subject to exposure to toxic and carcinogenic substances and fumes.
OFFICE EQUIPMENT: Able to operate laboratory centrifuge, copying machine, computer, FAX machine, and scanner.
PHYSICAL:
STANDING: Some standing during shift when not traveling.
WALKING: The position requires some walking.
LIFTING: Some lifting is required, up to approximately 50 pounds. Supplies should be loaded safely on a dolly or cart when transporting them between the courier vehicle and the facility.
VISUAL: 20/20 vision or correctable. Able to read various handwriting styles and computer screens.
HEARING: Must be able to communicate interact with patients during the performance of duties; in addition, able to receive and understand verbal requests, transcribing information into written format or pre-printed form.
SPEAKING: Good communication skills are required.
