Job description

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the HIV Clinical Services Manager and the general oversight of the Director of Infectious Disease, the Director of HIV and LGBTQ+ Services, and the Associate VP of Health Support Services, the HIV Research Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and execution of research studies involving SYHealth's HIV Department. Responsibilities include coordination of research project(s) and editing/writing related to project deliverables, including but not limited to research reports, manuscripts, protocols, and funding proposals. The HIV Research Supervisor will also be responsible for monitoring the progress of project deliverables and study implementation. Ongoing professional communication with internal and external project stakeholders is expected. In addition, the HIV Research Supervisor is responsible for: conduction of needs assessments, development and implementation of study promotional materials and research programs; program evaluation; oversight of research project budgets; report generation and submission; recruitment and supervision of staff; and the facilitation of program integration across SYHealth sites.

Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Participate in the recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees involved with HIV research projects; work closely with the manager to maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment.
  • Directly supervise assigned staff to include mid-year and annual performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, staff schedule, timekeeping and effort reporting and other areas as needed.
  • Assist HIV Clinical Services Manager in developing and coordinating the implementation of research protocols and program structure.
  • Routinely review established protocols and procedures and conduct quality assurance activities to ensure protocol compliance.
  • Ensure all data is collected and entered timely and accurately in accordance with study protocols and procedures.
  • Facilitate regular project communications inclusive of Principal Investigator, Project Manager, project staff, external partner agencies, and funding agencies. Work to troubleshoot issues with external partners as such issues arise.
  • Create and update IRB documents, submit items to the Internal Review Committee and provide research project updates.
  • Collaborate with the San Ysidro Health Research and Health promotions to align research programs and goals.
  • Keep Principal Investigators, Project Managers and general team apprised of project status, data collection, progress, subject recruitment, and reporting requirements.
  • Monitor participant enrollment, participation, and follow-up according to the requirements of specific research studies.
  • Monitor and forecast research program budgets to ensure budget targets and program needs are met.
  • Serve as the liaison between external partner staff and SYHealth staff.
  • Assist with the supervision of public health interns.


Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in training and educational programs as appropriate.
  • Attends meetings as required and participates in committees as directed.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule to allow for some weekend work as well as emergency coverage of shifts to meet the needs/demands of clients and related activities and events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Education Required:

Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field

Education Preferred:

Master's Degree in a health-related field

Experience Required:

1-4 years of experience providing services in a health care field required (depending on degree)

Experience Preferred:

1+ year of experience in HIV services preferred

Examples of qualifying experience include:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a health related field and 3-4 years of health education experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Master's degree in a health related field and 1-2 years of health education experience
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.


Certifications Required:
  • Valid CA Driver's license and insurance - required
  • Regular & reliable access to personal vehicle


Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to convey ideas and information to others and receive feedback effectively.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred


Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:
  • Ability to summarize and explain complex ideas and topics in everyday language
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff and external partners
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines


Equipment Used:

Computer, multi-line phone, fax, copier, scanner, house appliances, and vehicle.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. Lifting 25-40 lbs. Continuous contact with clients. Driving and occasional travel required. May work evenings and/or weekends.
