Job description

About Project VIDA

Our mission is to improve the quality of life and reduce health disparities in underserved communities by promoting self-empowerment and providing holistic health education and direct services. Project VIDA was founded in 1992 to address the urgent needs of racial and ethnic minorities. Initially, the organization provided HIV education through street outreach services to area youth. Today, we have expanded our community scope by initiating a variety of programs: direct services for people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and various prevention and health education programs. Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Prevention Coordinator is to oversee the success of all programs housed within the Prevention Services department. These include outreach, HIV/STI testing, PrEP, COVID-19 prevention and research, Hep C, and substance use services. Within Project Vida’s small-agency structure, the Project Coordinator works hands-on as the agency’s senior community engagement coordinator and outreach specialist to meet operational demands. This includes direct service to clients, program management and team mentorship. The Prevention Coordinator is also considered a senior staff member who works directly with the Executive Director and Clinical Supervisor of Care Services to ensure agency productivity and sustainability.

Job Duties:

Agency Operations

  • Develops cross-sector and inter-agency relationships with local schools, community organizations, medical facilities and community partners.
  • Assists in resource development and light fiscal management to support agency programming- which includes, but is not limited to, (1) fundraising, (2) entry-level bookkeeping and (3) inventory/supply management.
  • Partners with senior staff on agency-wide projects, as needed.

Department Operations

  • Oversees the development and implementation of departmental strategic plans with program staff.
  • Manages programmatic operations of all Prevention Services programs, including outreach, HIV/STI testing and target-specific evidence-based interventions.
  • Reinforces professional culture centered on quality care, cultural competence/sensitivity and client-centered service.
  • Evaluates departmental programs based on stated goals, objectives and relevant metrics/scopes.
  • Submits required reports internally to Executive Director and externally to funding institutions in accordance with established deadlines (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annually).
  • Assists with event planning and support group facilitation, as needed.
  • Attends required internal and external meetings, trainings and conferences.

Direct Service

  • Conducts day and late night community outreach (street, club, online, etc.) within the target population during weekdays and weekends.
  • Provides direct services to clients in HIV/STI testing, risk/harm reduction counseling, sex education, providing internal/external referrals.
  • Advocates for clients with information on relevant policies, services, and events which can improve quality of life.
  • Supports outreach, client recruitment, intake processes, and linkage to care, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

The Prevention Coordinator role has a non-traditional work schedule. Most of the outreach occurs, nights, weekends, late nights, early mornings and some holidays. As far as a schedule, the Prevention Coordinator could expect to have anywhere from 1 to 3 days in the office and the other days would be in the field conducting outreach. We conduct outreach at nightclubs, cruising spots, bath houses, sex parties, etc. Often hours can be as late/early as 7pm - 4 am. Of course no one is expected to be in the office the next morning after an early morning ending shift. As a department, outreach can occur up to 7 days a week, therefore outreach is a very frequent occurrence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Entry-level candidate with BA/BS degree; must possess a working knowledge of HIV, understand general Public Health concepts and demonstrate measured success in accessing supportive services.
  • Certifications/licensure: IDPH certified HIV tester and counselor (required), current phlebotomy certification (strongly preferred).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Cultural sensitivity to African American, Latino, and LGBT populations required.
  • Word processing/computer skills required (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Personal and organizational time management skills required.
  • Presentation/group facilitation skills required.
  • Availability to work a non-traditional work schedule including late night/early morning, weekday, weekend and holiday hours (ex. club outreach can occur as late/early as 4 or 5 am).
