Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine histologic techniques to be examined by a
pathologist. The histologic techniques include the following: fixation, processing, embedding,
microtomy and staining of tissue for evaluation.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*
preparation and staining using established departmental policies and procedures.
2. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and notifies other histology technologist. Maintains
instrumentation/equipment.
3. Performs quality control procedures established in the laboratory.
4. Performs routine computer data report and inquiry utilizing laboratory and hospital
computer information systems.
5. Accepts telephone calls pertaining to specimens. Transfers telephone calls to appropriate
section if knowledge is limited. Communicates concerns to appropriate associates
maintaining patient confidentiality.
6. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality
assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
7. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending
mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous
quality improvement.
8. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Associate’s with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must
include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree
or bachelor’s with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit
hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree;
OR
Active enrollment at an academic institution, having achieved 65% of the educational requirements
outlined above AND at least 5 years of Full Time direct experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s in a science related field with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology
and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to,
the baccalaureate degree.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Personal Protective Equipment: Must be prepared to wear when necessary.
Physical Demands: Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens, odorous
chemicals, carcinogens mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids.
Must be able to move about laboratory and between workstations. Must be able to occasionally
move, lift and/or carry lightweight materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds up to 5% of
the time.
