QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia State Teaching License with an endorsement in Social Studies or related field. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Virginia and U.S. government structures, history, and political processes. Experience in teaching government or related subjects at the high school level preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Commitment to fostering civic responsibility and critical thinking skills in students. Familiarity with technology tools for instructional purposes. Ability to create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom environment. Passion for continued professional growth and learning.
DESCRIPTION:
The teacher works primarily with high school students teaching Va. & US Government standards and other related content. They are responsible for creating and implementing lesson plans that include activities tailored to diverse student needs. The teacher employs various teaching strategies, aligned with the curriculum, and other methods to support students in their academic, social, and emotional development. They collaborate closely with other educators, specialists, and parents to provide a well-rounded and supportive learning environment. They assess students' progress, identify challenges, and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed):

  • Develop and implement engaging and standards-based lesson plans for high school Virginia & U.S. Government courses.
  • Align curriculum with state and national standards to ensure students acquire a comprehensive understanding of government structures, processes, and principles.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods, technologies, and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles and promote student engagement.
  • Design and administer assessments to measure student understanding and progress in alignment with curriculum objectives.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages active participation and respectful discourse.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies to create a conducive learning atmosphere.
  • Foster students' interest in government and politics by organizing relevant and current events discussions, debates, and projects.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, class activities, and upcoming events.
  • Stay informed about educational trends, teaching methodologies, and changes in government policies and share this knowledge with colleagues.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and content knowledge.
  • Integrate technology into classroom instruction to enhance student learning and prepare students for the digital aspects of civic engagement.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings, school events, and professional learning communities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION:
Employee reports directly to the School Principal
WORK CONDITIONS:
Duties performed are typically in the school setting. Performs professional work providing support and consultative services for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.
