SalaryThe Department of Physiology and Division of Pathology are seeking a Histology Technician II for the Investigative HistoPathology Lab (https://sites.google.com/msu.edu/ihpl/home). The position will prepare data and tissue slides for primary investigators and students; assist on research projects and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment; instruct and demonstrates techniques and procedures to students and staff; assist in coordinating chemical waste disposal; maintain equipment in order to maintain the workflow of the laboratory; prepares microscopic slides according to established procedures; performs special stains and immunohistochemical procedures in order to demonstrate characteristics of tissues.
The Department of Physiology and Division of Pathology have significant teaching and research missions. The position works with a global community of internationally recognized scholars from diverse nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds; two large undergraduate majors (Physiology and Neuroscience) with approximately 1,200 majors combined; the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology (MCIP) graduate program, popularly combined with professional degrees (MD, DO, DVM); and vibrant research programs in areas such as cancer biology, cardiac pathophysiology, diabetes and obesity, gastrointestinal health and disease, immunity and tissue inflammation, musculoskeletal diseases, molecular metabolism and disease, and neuroscience.
This is a full-time position. Job duties include, but are not limited to:
60% - Prepares data and tissue slides for primary investigators and students. Prepares microscopic slides according to established procedures, for paraffin embedded and frozen tissue samples from human and veterinary samples.
25% - Assists on research projects and maintains laboratory supplies and equipment. Mixes reagents and prepares solutions for staining of slides. Performs special staining techniques and immunohistochemical procedures in order to demonstrate characteristics of tissues.
5% - Instructs and demonstrates techniques and procedures to students and staff.
5% - Assists in coordinating chemical waste disposal.
5% - Maintains records and completes monthly statistical reports for the laboratory.
The anticipated hourly rate is a minimum of $20.46 (approximately $42,556 annually) commensurate with education, training, and experience.
The position is part of the Clerical Technical Union bargaining group and governed by their collective bargaining agreement. This position requires regular in-person presence at the Physiology/Pathology lab in East Lansing, MI. The position is not remote compatible. The Department/Division is unable to offer immigration and/or employment visas for this position.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Histology or Chemistry; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing histochemical procedures, preparing slides, and training others; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Desired Qualifications
QIHC eligible; high attention to detail with creative and intuitive flexibility for problem solving; ability to “think outside the box” of normal histologic techniques for custom research work; high level of customer service commitment and ability to work with clients from a diverse population; ability to instruct or demonstrate techniques to others with varying levels of experience in histology; ability to function independently as well as in a team setting; excellent computer skills and familiarity with Windows Office suite.
Avalid vehicle operator'slicense is required to visit off-site facilities.
