Histology Technician $28 to $33/hr

Lead Histology Technician $32 to $39/hr

Histology Technician

Under the general supervision of the laboratory manager, the Histologic technician will gross and preserve tissue specimens for sectioning, glass slide preparation for digital scanning and analysis.

 

Job duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for receiving and accessioning anatomic pathology specimens as well as performing other routine technical procedures.
  • Perform tissue grossing, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and a variety of staining procedures as required.
  • Prepares slides for digital scanning and/or send outs as requested.
  • Adheres to laboratory quality control policies by documenting all quality control activities while maintaining a clean and well-organized work area to prevent cross contamination.
  • Observes health and safety protocols during all cleanup procedures to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedure on laboratory equipment according to SOP and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintains direct communication and follow up to all necessary patient care / laboratory tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Histology Manager.

 

Skills and abilities

  • Spatial ability is required to perceive three-dimensional and geometric relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and making embedding molds.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and to mount onto microscope slides
  • Color discrimination required to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes in order that essential features of tissue sections can be properly defined.

 

Education and experience

  • Associates Degree in Biology or other related science field; Bachelor’s of Science in Biology or related science field preferred.
  • ASCP HT/HTL certified or eligibility to sit for the certification exam required; and must meet State and Federal requirements for the position and duties to be performed.
  • Previously worked in the Histology field for 1 year (preferred)
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience (preferred)

 

 

 

 

Lead Histology Technician

Under the general supervision of the Pathologist and the Lab Manager, the Lead Histologic Technician will perform all task as the Histology Techs, such as, prepare tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis and shall provide leadership and guidance to the Histology Techs on his/her shift.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and guidance to Histology Techs on his/her shift, will instruct and training Histology Techs and may perform more complicated tasks.
  • Performs specimen collection, accessioning and logging routines that include: making scheduled rounds to pick up surgical specimens; checking specimens for criteria of acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork; recording receipt of specimens in the log and assigning identification number according to department protocol; referring any problem specimen to the area of collection and informing the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary
  • Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures such as: preparing the tissue grossing area with appropriate materials and instruments; maintaining and assuring specimen identification by correctly labeling cassettes and maintaining workflow in concert with the pathologist; cleaning workstations at the completion of grossing procedures. Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing the processor according to procedure, and changing staining solutions.
  • Contributes to general laboratory functions and institutional needs by attending regular staff meetings and related continuing education activities; observing hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintaining a safe, clean, and prepared work area.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a CAHEA-accredited histotechnology program, or;
  • Associate’s degree plus one year of full-time experience in histopathology within the last three years under the supervision of a pathologist,
  • ASCP HT or HTL certification or have the ability to obtain either certification within 6 months of start date
  • 3 or more years experience as a histology technician

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
