The Comparative Pathology and Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR) Histology Laboratory is seeking an experienced histotechnologist to perform comprehensive routine histology services for research science clients and services within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Medical Center at the Ohio State University. These include routine processing, paraffin and frozen embedding and microtomy, and routine and special histochemical stains. Opportunities may exist to learn and perform advanced services including immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, or experimental or novel histology techniques.
Essential Functions Include:
- Perform routine histology services including processing tissues samples, embedding (frozen and paraffin), microtomy (frozen and paraffin; training provided following start for CPDISR-specific equipment), and coverslipping
- Operate the CPDISR autostainers for routine and special histochemical slide staining (training for autostainers provided)
- Perform special histochemical stains by hand according to established SOPs
- Keep track of submissions/cases as they move through the histology laboratory using the eRAMP software (training provided following start date)
- Quality control daily work and notify the laboratory manager and/or CPDISR Director of issues or need to troubleshoot
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following all university, department and CPDISR policies
- Maintain a professional work environment in interactions with coworkers, CPDISR pathologists, department pathologists and residents, and other CPDISR clients
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a variety of stakeholders
Non-Essential Functions Include:
- Assist with supply inventory
Required Qualifications:
2-year associate’s degree or Graduate of a NAACLS accredited histotech program; certified (HT or HTL) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). 2 years of relevant experience required.
Desired Qualifications:
At least 4-6 years of active histology experience and willingness to become HTL certified within 18 months of hire, preferred; routine histology skills (processing, embedding and cutting - paraffin, routine histochemical stains, coverslipping). QIHC certification; experience with chromogenic immunohistochemistry and/or immunofluorescence techniques; experience with special histochemical stains by hand and autostainer; experience reviewing and/or writing SOPs; familiarity with standard personal protection equipment used in a histology laboratory.
Working Conditions:
Occasional lifting of ~50 lbs., repetitive motions (especially during microtomy), exposure to fixed animal tissues and occasionally paraffin embedded human tissues or cell lines; possible animal dander exposure; formalin and other fixative chemical exposure, ethanol and other chemical exposure.
Target salary range: $23.94 - $31.92 per hour
