The Histological Technologist performs the preparation of laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist through the use of microtomy, special staining, histochemistry, and other appropriate techniques. The Histological Technologist is a clinical laboratory technologist with a specialty licensure in histology who works with in the pathology department to prepare samples for evaluation by the pathologist using specialized knowledge and skills. This person will prep frozen sections and have the ability to use a cryostat for immediate evaluation. This person may be asked to assist in grossing of pathology specimens into the pathology laboratory. The technologist will be responsible for preparation of cytology non-gyn slides and cell block. This person must conform to HIPPA requirements and follow all OSHA, CAP and other regulatory agencies regulations maintaining the standards of Baptist Health Care. This person must maintain all continuing education hours in a timely manner to keep Florida Histotechnologist licensure in good standing without lapse.
Responsibilities
Prepares specimen using the appropriate technique required to produce an acceptable sample for evaluation by the pathologist. Follows established procedures for histology quality control and reports discrepancies to the histology supervisor. Performs scheduled and as needed maintenance on equipment routinely used in specimen preparation. Troubleshoots equipment, reagents, or procedural technique when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the laboratory as defined in the scope of service to ensure that appropriate testing for all clients served is correctly and accurately performed. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or bodily fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization. May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- Associates Degree Clinical Laboratory Sciences Required or
- Bachelor's Degree Clinical Laboratory Sciences Required
Minimum Work Experience
- 1-3 years experience. Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Clinical Laboratory Technician Licensed Current Florida license Upon Hire Required
