By joining our Department of Highways, District 7 , Project Delivery & Preservation Branch I, LexingtonSection, Fayette County Unit as a HIGHWAY TECHNICIAN SUPERINTENDENT I in Fayette County, you'll have theopportunity to supervise a highway road unit in the maintenance and repair of roadways and special projectswithin an assigned highway district area.
Holders of the HIGHWAY TECHNICIAN SUPERINTENDENT I position will complete tasks such as:

  • Supervise and assist employees in maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, and landslide repairs.
  • Provide technical assistance and oversight on highway maintenance projects and inspect work forcompletion.
  • Coordinate and inspect road repairs and contract work.
  • Respond to and supervise snow and ice removal and other emergencies.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Supervisory management and evaluation of employee skills.
  • Supervising, overseeing, and assisting highway employees in the maintenance and repair of roads,bridges, culverts, guardrails, roadside vegetation, etc.
  • Coordinating and inspecting contract work such as, but not limited to asphalt, guardrail, cracksealing, landslide repair, drainage repair, etc.
  • Maintaining records and reports on personnel, equipment, and supplies.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Ten years of construction or highway maintenance experience
  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement
  • Experience completing shift or on-call schedules.
  • Experience in intermediate and heavy equipment operations for road maintenance.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Must have ten years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program will substitute for six (6) years of highway related experience in construction or maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):Must be 18 years of age.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification.The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Leadership Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide.Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
