We are undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks and buses to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.We are seeking a High Voltage Battery Cell Technical Specialist to develop cell-level requirements for HV Batteries optimized for our platform applications and meet or exceed Government, Navistar, and appropriate transportation standards.
Responsibilities- Create and maintain cell requirement specification and test specification that includes mechanical, electrical, environmental, and safety requirements and test procedures.
- Work with internal teams and suppliers to develop and test cells through various sample stages from concept to production.
- Research, aggregate, and rate present and future cell technologies
- Create and maintain a cell database of cell KPIs, supplier capability, application potential
- Establish relationships with potential cell suppliers and work with Navistar engineering and procurement to assess and rank supplier capability
- Keep Navistar eMobility team and Navistar management abreast of latest cell technologies; research and respond to related inquiries
- Create and maintain cell technology roadmaps and sync with Navistar product plans
- Obtain cell samples, create test plans, schedule, and manage testing internally or with independent third parties to: characterize cell, identify limits, verify performance, life, and abuse results, and gather data for modeling and BMS calibration
- Create and update reports from cell test data
- Review and assess suppliers' DVP&R results, track production, and support resolution of quality issues via 8D process
- Work with thermal, integration, and controls teams to optimize cell selection and design for future programs
- Work with our Global Traton partners to identify opportunities for cost-sharing and commonization
- Work with cell suppliers to localize cell production and secure supply chains
- Work with cell suppliers on opportunities to reduce costs, improve cell performance, quality, and processes
- Develop a simplified tool to allow marketing/sales team to provide rapid guidance to customers on the optimal vehicle configuration for their applications
- Create, validate, and update cell chemical, electrical, and thermal models using closed-loop learnings
- Utilize cell modeling to predict pack performance and life over customer representative usage scenarios
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
- At least 8 years of experience in product design/development
- At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

- Master's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
- At least 6 years of experience in product design/development
- At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities
OR
- PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology
- At least 3 years of experience in product design/development
- At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities
- Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. - Experience in creating and maintaining cell requirement specification and test specification.
- Experience in cell testing and familiar with cell development process from concept to production.
- Experience in cell modeling - including life, performance, chemical, and thermal behavior
- Strong written and verbal communication skills - Must be able to break down complex and esoteric concepts and explain them to a general audience
- Able to properly utilize DOE at the development level
- Experience with FMEAs and root-cause analysis
- Six Sigma Black Belt
- Strong in engineering concepts related to cells and their development including electrochemical, thermodynamic, material, mechanical principles and the underlying physics
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion chemistries like NMC & LFP, and how to optimize them for specific applications
- Ability and flexibility to travel domestically and abroad
- Experience with MathCAD, Matlab, Simulink, and/or other modeling software
- Experience with CFD simulations
- Familiar with UN 38.3 requirements and other relevant standards (IEC, IEEE, SAE, UL) and related cell test procedures
- PhD in Chemical engineering or Masters with significant experience in secondary cell development
- Proven experience with energy cells for transportation (academia, cell OEM, or high-volume customer)
- Development of cell models - including life, performance, chemical, and thermal
- Development of developing and running CFD simulations
- Experience with cells used for transportation applications
- Expertise in statistical analysis
Navistar provides a competitive total rewards package commensurate with applicable skills, knowledge, and experience and consistent with internal and external market practices. The annual salary range for this role is $116K - 155K a year.
