Job description

High School History Teacher - up to $5,000 signing bonus
A full-time, competitively paid teaching position at a first-rate college preparatory school for boys.
Boys' Latin of Philadelphia seeks a High School History Teacher charged with developing informed thinkers, connectors, consumers, and historians. The teacher will deliver curricula that promotes the idea that history continues to shape and influence our lives, connecting historical and current events so that students understand the present, consider their own beliefs, and develop empathy for different cultures. The teacher will challenge students to think critically, ask questions, and articulate ideas with supported arguments. In class, students will engage in Socratic seminars, role playing, debates, research, and writing assignments. The teacher will promote and nurture the education of students by planning and tailoring courses of study; monitoring, assisting with, and correcting academic efforts; and providing a safe environment conducive to learning and character development. All students take Civics, World History, and U.S. History, and have access to a wide-variety of elective courses including African American History, Philosophy, Social Justice, and World Religions.
The teacher will perform the following duties:

  • Plan, develop, and deliver a college preparatory curriculum that is aligned with PA Common Core standards and best practices.
  • Assess students regularly and use data to drive instruction as well as to provide remediation and enrichment based on individual student need and ability.
  • Communicate students' progress toward realizing academic goals, partnering with parents and school personnel to provide instructional and emotional support and resources.
  • Build a classroom environment that is welcoming, academic, joyful, and safe.
  • Commit to the school's extended day structure, serving students outside of the regular school day, and teaching in the Saturday School and summer academy programs.
  • Sponsor extracurricular activities as part of the school's award-winning Leadership Academy.
  • Enforce the Student Code of Conduct and serve as a culture keeper of the Boys' Latin mission.

The teacher will demonstrate the following competencies:
  • Unwavering commitment to the school's mission of preparing boys for success in college and beyond.
  • Desire to continuously learn and increase effectiveness as a teacher and professional to drive results among students.
  • Willingness to be flexible and go above and beyond to meet the needs of all students.
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with all members of the school community, including students, parents, faculty and staff members, administrators, and external partners.
  • Be a subject area expert, strategic problem-solver, and dedicated team player.
  • Bachelor's degree and PA state certification.

Boys' Latin of Philadelphia prepares boys for success in college and beyond. Founded in 2007 to address the dearth of quality educational opportunities for boys in Philadelphia, Boys' Latin provides a world-class college preparatory education to 800 students in grades six through 12. As a public charter school there are no admissions requirements and students enroll by randomized lottery. With a 12:1 student/teacher ratio, Boys' Latin offers an intimate learning community in which each young man is encouraged to be the architect of his own fortune by pursuing excellence across a range of endeavors.
