Job description

Heschel High School is seeking a Girls' JV Varsity Volleyball Head Coach for the 2023 Fall Season. Heschel volleyball teams compete in the Private School Athletic Association (PSAA). To perform this job successfully, coaches must view themselves as teachers first and must value the concept that interscholastic athletics are an extension of the educational process of Abraham Joshua Heschel School. The values of wellness, citizenship, sportsmanship, integrity, and ethics most affect students in interscholastic athletics when coaches emphasize those values. Coaches must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential duties with respect, care, and compassion for all student-athletes. Previous High School coaching experience or equivalent is required.
TITLE: Girls JV Volleyball Head Coach
REPORTS TO: Director of Athletics and principal
FUNCTION: The Head Coach is responsible for creating an environment that reflects the values and goals of the Heschel Athletics Department. The Head Coach is also responsible for organizing the team in such a way that, one, maximizes the educational and athletic potential of all student-athletes, and two, allows students to develop an appreciation of volleyball.
Education and Certification Requirements:
Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Must attain First-Aid-CPR-AED Certificate and CDC online concussion training before the first practice

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in physical education or related area; any level of coaching certification from a recognized sport governing body

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Teaching/Training
    1. Demonstrate patience and the ability to meet the needs of student-athletes regardless of experience.
    2. Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities in a safe, progressive manner that ensures individual growth and team development.
    3. Assesses and manages players' behavior and keeps the athletic director informed of athletic performance and concerns.
  2. Supervision
    1. Ensure that health and safety precautions are taken and observed during all activities.
    2. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury and reports all injuries incurred in practice/meets to the Athletic Director.
    3. Assumes responsibility for the care and supervision of all student-athletes.
  3. Other Duties
    1. Models sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
    2. Distributes equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students.
    3. Models nondiscriminatory practices and fosters an inclusive environment in all aspects of the team.
    4. Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
    5. Performs any other related duties as assigned Athletic Director & Principal, or other appropriate administrators.

Experience and Competency Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential duties with care and compassion for all student-athletes.
Required:
  • Participation or coaching experience at a high level
  • Must possess effective communication skills and effective coaching techniques and skills
  • Must possess the ability to give feedback in a manner that advances a player's knowledge, skill, and confidence.
  • Must possess the knowledge of the rules and regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport
  • Must have a valid concussion management certification and First AID/CPR/AED certification

Job Specifics:
  • Length of season- Approximately 10 weeks (Aug 21st - End of October)
  • Pre-season on the weekdays Aug 21st- Aug 31st (10- 2 pm)
  • Regular practices: Two hours, max three sessions per week after school (including games)
  • Game schedule: league games plus playoffs at the end of October
  • Pay rate: 4,500 per season
  • Vaccination required
