Job description

Job Summary:
To actively participate in the preventive and corrective maintenance of specialized ventilation/biocontainment systems such as High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration, Biological Safety Cabinets, pressurized BSL4 suits, and associated instrumentation within medical research facilities to ensure safe operation and regulatory compliance

Scope: Impact of this position relates to Biosafety and Biocontainment operations across all UTMB campuses where such technical services are needed. This is an entry level position consisting mostly of on-the-job training equivalent to an apprenticeship.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience working with basic hand tools and metering equipment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearances (DOJ Tier 1 select agent clearance) required for high containment laboratory access.


Job Duties:
  • Participates in the monitoring and in-situ testing of HEPA filters used in primary containment devices such as Biological Safety Cabinets, laminar flow benches, animal isolation units, and lab ventilation systems.
  • Navigates manufacturer’s specifications, national standards, and UTMB standard operating procedures in order to certify the testing performed on primary containment systems.
  • Follows all safety procedures, technical directives, and recommended practices in the decontamination processes for biological safety cabinets, HEPA filtered ventilation systems, and medical research laboratories.
  • Participates in the setup, repair, testing, and tracking of positive pressure suits associated with BSL4 environments.
  • Coordinates and schedules annual calibration of test instruments used in testing, certification, and decontamination processes.
  • Maintains an inventory of parts and consumables for use in all areas of responsibility.
  • Assists in maintaining a database of primary containment equipment maintenance activity and all associated parameters.
  • Maintains customer service-oriented relationships with laboratory and facility maintenance personnel in accordance with UTMB employee Standards of Conduct.
  • Participates in industry related training internal or external to UTMB as a commitment to continued learning and professional development.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearances (DoJ Tier 1 select agent clearance) required for high containment laboratory access.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience working with controlled environments within the medical research, pharmaceutical, or electronics manufacturing industries.
  • Three years of experience working in a customer service type environment.


Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience.
