The Town of Needham is seeking the right individual(s) to fill the position(s) of Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (HMEO) within the Department of Public Works. Needham has a history of strong funding and support of the Department of Public Works and we are seeking individuals who want to learn and grow with the organization. The Department of Public Works has HMEO positions in four different divisions: Highway, Parks & Forestry, Recycling and Solid Waste, and Water, Sewer, & Drains.
The Highway Division maintains and repairs roads, sidewalks, parking lots, traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, grass berms, and Town fences. Highway also oversees the Snow & Ice Program.
The Parks & Forestry Division provides for the care and maintenance of public trees, maintains parks and athletic fields, provides support for athletic and recreational programs, and maintains grounds for outdoor passive recreation.
The Recycling & Solid Waste Division provides residents with recycling and solid waste disposal services, as well as operates the Town's Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS), including the yard waste and materials processing areas.
The Water, Sewer, & Drains Division operates and maintains the Town's water system, including supply, storage, treatment, and distribution; maintains the storm drain system, including compliance with the national Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES); and maintains and cleans the sewer collection system.

All Divisions
- Operate light and Heavy Motorized and hydraulic equipment such as heavy trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, tractors, sweepers, pavers, rollers, bucket trucks, and other equipment
- Perform some routine and skilled laboring duties at intermediate levels
- Prepare routine records, logs, and reports
- Respond to routine inquiries, requests, and complaints from residents, contractors, etc.
- Assist outside contractors engaged in construction activities
- Operate snow plowing, removal, sanding, and salting equipment
- Maintain work areas in a clean, safe, and operable condition and adhere to applicable safety and health rules and regulations, and endeavor to continuously improve services provided to taxpayers
Highway Division
- Perform routine and skilled laboring duties such as repairing and resurfacing roads and sidewalks, grading shoulders, setting curbs, and placing and finishing concrete sidewalk work
- Set up traffic safety patterns and safe work zones
Parks & Forestry Division
- Apply pesticides and herbicides
- Cut and remove tree limbs, fell trees, plant trees and shrubs
- Perform routine maintenance to parks, fields, and trees
Recycling & Solid Waste Division
- Respond to routine inquiries, requests, and complaints from residents, contractors, etc.; provide residents with information about recycling, disposal, and RTS services.
- Monitor activity to ensure waste is handled appropriately.
- Transport, process, and load solid waste, recyclables, and other materials collected on site
- Process and manage organic waste in compost/yard waste operations
Water, Sewer, & Drains Division
- Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining sewer pipes, water mains, storm drain pipes, services, and hydrants
- Clean storm sewers, catch basins, culverts, and associated piping and structures
To be considered for the position, applicants must have at least:
- General knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma and a minimum of three months of relevant experience.
- A valid Driver's License
- A CDL Class B License (Class A preferred)
- Class 2A Hoisting Engineer's License (all divisions)
- Class 1B Hoisting Engineer's License (Water/Sewer/Drains)
- Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers and the general public
- Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions for frequent and extended periods, requiring the ability to lift, carry, and position heavy objects.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CDL Class A License (all divisions)
- Class 1C Hoisting Engineer's License (Highway and RSW)
- Class 4E Hoisting License (Water/Sewer/Drains)
- Drinking Water Supply License D1-D4 (Water/Sewer/Drains)
Pre-Hire Process:
