*Position is budgeted at $26.08 hourly commensurate with related education and experience.


Maintains, diagnoses and repairs Heavy Equipment.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots repairs needed; performs computer testing on electronic systems; orders and parts, materials, and supplies required for the maintenance; schedules maintenance; maintains daily log of work performed.
  • Troubleshoots and assesses repairs in Heavy Equipment needed through inspection of equipment and systems to include diesel engines, brakes, transmissions, and electrical and hydraulic systems; repairs equipment by pulling transmissions, truck assemblies, rear end, hydraulic systems; and replacing hoses, repairing electrical and mechanical systems, clutches, pumps, etc. in the field or shop; services Heavy Equipment by changing filters, oils, lubricating chassis, etc. according to established maintenance schedules; responds to road calls in the field and tows vehicles as needed.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on light to Heavy Equipment; works on electrical systems by checking fuses, broken wires, testing circuits with ohm meters; checks gages to ensure they are in correct and operable conditions; completes tune-ups on diesel engines, setting valves, adjusting fuel injectors, and timing engines.
  • Performs minor welding and braising in repairing motors, engines, brackets on mufflers, shock framework; may fabricate parts as needed.
  • Assists other mechanics on major jobs; replaces windows and windshields; test drives equipment or trucks after work is performed to ensure proper operation. Maintains the cleanliness of the shop and work area; ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Knowledge / Skills:
  • Considerable knowledge of Heavy Equipment and their parts; of equipment manuals; of tools and diagnostic equipment; of safety regulations; and of general servicing of equipment. Ability to operate light and heavy-duty equipment; to interpret manuals; to use tools, read gauges and operate diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read; to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; to operate shop equipment and tools; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to interpret manuals; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; and to determine parts and materials needed for repairs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of formal training and/or experience in Heavy Equipment service, maintenance, and/or repair totaling six (6) years. Certification by Professional Automotive or Mechanics Association may substitute for two (2) of the required years.
  • Must obtain HAZMAT within 90 days of hire and have an Air Brake and Tanker endorsement on a Class B CDL.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR, crane, forklift, and welding certifications.
Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both a repair shop or in a field location in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, gases, airborne particles, chemicals, allergens, and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near equipment and machinery and exposure to excessive noise. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required. Work requires the ability to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Will be subject to random drug screening. Travel may be required. May be subject to exposure to CRT's and VDT's.

Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.Employment Type: Full-Time
