Job description

Overview: The Heat Treat Operatoris responsible for the set-up and operation of induction units to perform various tests to verify product meets customer requirements and other machining department duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtains parts for sampling at the intervals prescribed by the Work Instructions and/or at the supervisor’s direction.
  • Operates saws, polishers and other necessary equipment to prepare samples.
  • Tests parts for surface hardness and effective case depth.
  • Documents record monitoring and sample test data results per schedule.
  • Samples and check splines using gaging after induction heating and before tempering at prescribed intervals.
  • Safely interrupt and re-start robot cycles when obtaining samples.
  • Clears robot faults and jams in the induction cell when in production.
  • Loads parts and operates Heat Treatment units in case of automation failure.
  • Operates the induction units in an automated mode.
  • Clears faults and incomplete cycles in induction and properly disposition affected parts.
  • Sets up the induction units. This includes changing coils, setting travel lengths, and calling the proper program to run the scheduled part numbers per Work Instructions.
  • Adjusts tooling positions during the run. Clean quench rings as required.
  • Assures all gages and indicators are properly calibrated.
  • Checks the parts per MWF Part Print requirements.
  • Marks any required symbols and designations on the part.
  • Loads discrepant parts on a pallet for disposition. Marks or tags part with discrepancy.
  • Reports discrepancies to the supervisors.
  • Keeps track of part count.
  • Transports parts with crane, pallet jack, or other device but not including the towmotor.
  • Tops off water, quenchant, change filters, and lubricate unit as required.
  • Stacks or loads all products per requirements when needed.
  • Fills out the proper tags in accordance with instructions. Places the proper tag on pallets, baskets, or individual parts before moving them.
  • Watches for visual defects at any operation in the cell and report that condition to the foreman.
  • Follows and support scrap product procedures and non-conforming product procedure.
  • Follows proper containment procedures.
  • Fills out and return all paperwork required for all duties performed on each shift, such as time tickets, scrap sheets, etc.
  • Keeps units running. If downtime becomes extended, notify the foreman immediately.
  • Keeps robots operating, clear faults, and clear jams.
  • Remove chip hoppers for dumping.
  • Maintains part number and heat code integrity.
  • Maintains coverage through lunches, breaks and shift changes.
  • Sorts and stacks mixed parts by part number, heat code, or part condition.
  • Writes time ticket at the end of the shift.
  • Reports any problems either mechanical or safety to foreman as soon as possible.
  • Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Follows all safety and plant rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • One to three months’ related experience and/or training preferred.

Key Competencies

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to effectively report relevant data and job specific information as needed
  • Ability to provide detailed descriptions through written and verbal communication work and machine conditions and status
  • Ability work independently and within a team with supervision as required.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Computer Skills:
  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks, and other systems where applicable.

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Must have a good mechanical aptitude
  • Must be able to operate and use a crane, pallet jack, or other devices.
  • Satisfactory completion of Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test.
  • Must be able to perform all duties of the Utility Operator position.
  • Must successfully complete an on-line Mori Seiki training course.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing ladders and stairs to reach work at potential heights of 30 ft or more
  • Navigate narrow walkways, confined spaces and overhead mezzanines
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in work spaces
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
  • Comfortable working in confined work environments

Work Environment:
The Heat Treat Operator interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. This role will encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkways, active shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
