The University of Miami Health System, "UHealth”, Department of Pediatrics has an exciting opportunity for a Hearing Screener. The Hearing Screener assists in conducting screening procedures for early detection of hearing loss in infants and, at times, toddlers upon consultation requests from the treating physician. The Hearing Screener examines the medical record and queries the nursing staff regarding risk factors associated with congenital or late onset hearing loss, documents the instrumentation type of hearing screen (i.e., automated auditory brainstem response or otoacoustic emissions) and the patient demographics in preparation for the audiologist’s review. The Hearing Screener works under the supervision of a licensed audiologist. The individual in this position will cover all weekends, vacation coverage with prior arrangement, and sick leave coverage as needed (on call). Holiday coverage is required.

  • Meets with patients and conducts hearing screenings.

  • Explains procedures to patients and families and gathers documents and information from the parents, nursing staff, and/or the child’s medical record regarding hearing loss risk factors.

  • Cleans all audiology equipment at close of the business day.

  • Maintains relevant inventory and supplies to ensure adequate stock levels.

  • Assists the audiologist with completing paperwork for entry into the state Department of Health Database (eReports).

  • Facilitates goals and objectives established by the department.

  • Maintains patient files and performs clerical duties and other support functions.

  • Review census for each nursery to determine which babies need and are eligible for hearing screening.

  • Comply with universal precautions before making physical contact with each child.

  • Perform newborn hearing screen using otoacoustic emissions or auditory brainstem response in accordance with program protocol and print test results.

  • Review chart / interview nurses to determine risk factors associated with hearing loss.

  • Complete newborn hearing screening form with demographics, birth status, risk factors, type of test, date of test, location of test, and tester.

  • Affix test results printout onto back of Infant Hearing Program Registration form.

  • Upload the screening results into the child’s electronic medical record.

  • Deposit completed Infant Hearing Program Registration Form into letter bin for transfer to the Mailman Center for supervisor’s review.

  • Dispose of one-time use probe tips

  • Clean and organize equipment cart at end of the day.

  • Notify program director if supplies are needed.

  • Cover equipment cart with sheet at end of shift to protect contents from dust.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; BA or BS college degree preferred.

  • No prior experience is required. Training will be direct supervised on the job training before functioning under indirect supervision.

  • Able to work weekends, on call, and holidays.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
