Healthy Weight & Your Child Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Healthy Weight & Your Child Instructor at the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Creates a safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected; builds relationships with and among members and program participants.
  • Delivers HW&YC curriculum to participants in a safe, effective, and compelling way.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with children and adults and helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Encourages group participation and interaction through the use of open-ended questions.
  • Creates a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive and facilitates commitment and retention of participants.
  • Makes learning a shared responsibility for the group.
  • Encourages adult and youth involvement in all activities, goal setting and overall participation.
  • Prepares before each class (i.e., be familiar with the session outline, review content for the class, place reminder calls to participants and develops plans for games and activities).
  • Provides accessibility to participants before and after class to answer questions; displays empathy in support of helping program participants build confidence to achieve their health and wellness goals.
  • Follows up with participants outside of regular class time if they are unable to attend the class and provides in-person make-up session opportunities.
  • Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  • Assists the activity leader/content leader as needed.
  • Able to facilitate Healthy Weight and Your Child for the full program cycle.
  • Keeps accurate records of participants' weekly attendance, body weight, total weekly physical activity totals, etc....).
  • Organizes and puts away class equipment and reports any damaged equipment.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Participates in HW&YC instructor team discussions and meetings. Offers ideas and tools for facilitation and remains engaged with the HW&YC team.
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age; high school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of basic health, nutrition, and fitness.
  • Obtain and remain compliant with all certifications and standards assigned by YMCA of the USA and the AMA YMCA.
  • Must have strong written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work with both adults and children.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with listening and motivational interviewing and an understanding of behavior changes required is a plus.
  • Flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends is a plus.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certifications and Child Abuses Prevention, Anti-Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls trainings required within 30 days of hire.
