Job description

Performs supervisory responsibilities for security operations for the University Campus and Health Sciences Center by managing daily activities. Directs personnel involved in establishing, promoting and maintaining security and property protection.
Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; employee adherence to annual education and certification requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates day to day operations of Health Safety and Security under the supervision of the Health Security Manager including attending meetings pertaining to safely and security.
  • Directly supervises security professionals in the Health Safety and Security Department for University Hospital properties, Clinics and Research Centers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training personnel; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining personnel; addressing non-criminal complaints and resolving problems.
  • Ensures adherence to established rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ensures adequate security is provided in the patrol of all campus buildings designated Research Park buildings, University Health Sciences Center buildings and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
  • Coordinates with corporals in the administration of discipline where a command decision is required by consulting with those involved and issuing a recommendation to facilitate a conclusion.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance records for security vehicles.
  • Coordinates and maintains work schedules.
  • Ensures security incident reports and statistical data is completed properly and submitted on time.
  • Initiates and coordinates new programs pertaining to proper security patrol and procedure to ensure current and effective methods are used.
  • Ensures training records are maintained on all Health Security Professionals
  • Supervises Health Security Professionals in their shift responsibilities.
  • Assists with hiring, training, conducting performance evaluations and managing employee performance.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of work schedules and ensures adequate staffing levels.
  • Functions as a liaison between junior and senior security personnel.
  • Performs the duties of an Health Security Professionals as needed.
  • Assists in development of security policies and procedures and in communicating these in written and verbal formats.
  • Responds to inquiries and investigates and resolves security-related problems.
  • Prepares incident reports and provides regular updates to senior security personnel.
  • Actively manage the threat environment to prevent or minimize the effects of workplace violence.
  • Collaborates with various care delivery teams and other departments to address and respond to workplace violence incidents.
  • Provide direction to officers in addressing issues related to workplace violence and patient/family aggression that either disrupts or has the potential to disrupt the care giving environment or which tangibly threatens the safety of Health staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Conduct daily shift briefings, incident report reviews, and monitor security staffing levels.
  • Provides de-escalation/personal safety and education/awareness tailored to varying populations within Health hospitals and clinics to reduce crime, reduce loss, foster a positive culture of security, and improve employee perceptions of safety.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to conduct Risk Assessments and work aggressively to mitigate risks identified in assessment recommendations.
  • Effectively integrate security with organizational partners in Risk, Safety, Compliance, Privacy, Human Resources, Information Technology, Nursing, Facilities, and other critical functional areas, to include membership in appropriate committees, work groups, huddles, and participation in recurring meetings and information exchanges.
  • Provide appropriate guidance, direction, mission-based skills training, resources, and regular performance feedback to afford all team members the maximum opportunity to be highly successful.
  • Analyzes Safety/Security related systems including but not limited to access, surveillance, monitoring, parking, securing and other related components.
  • Performs and coordinates audits to support future planning.
  • Ensures security staff receive appropriate new employee orientation, Infection Control, Security and Safety Training, Fire Safety, Infant Abduction, Emergency Preparedness, Annual Health Compliance Training and any other appropriate education tied to ensuring staff competency.
  • Ensures staff compliance with International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security certification requirements.
  • Able to obtain certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention via Crisis Prevention Institute.
  • Able to obtain certification in Healthcare Defensive Tactics System via Personal Safety Training Institute.
  • Able to obtain Supervisor level certification from IAHSS.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Five years’ related experience
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check
  • Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • A valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • A proficient knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment (proprietary alarms, CCTV systems, computers, etc.);

  • The ability to work at a fast pace and make swift decisions to facilitate effective and efficient communication during stressful and emergency events.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with frequent interruption.
  • Detailed information gathering and writing skills. Excellent spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to work shift work that includes weekends, holidays, and extended shifts. Shifts are subject to change with or without notice.
