Job Description and Duties

The Department of State Hospitals (DSH)- Metropolitan, Health Information Management Department (HIMD), has a permanent, full time, vacancy for a Health Records Technician I (HRT I). Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager or designee, the HRT I performs a variety of general office and clerical work in support of the Hospital's Vision, Mission, Goals, and Values. The Health Records Technician I is expected to consistently exercise a high degree of self-initiative and independence when performing assigned tasks. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Abstract, process, file, collate, and audit data from HEALTH RECORDs. Enter abstracted HEALTH RECORD data into the Admissions/Discharge/Transfers (ADT) computer system. Code HEALTH RECORDs in accordance with DSM, ICD, and CPT coding guidelines: such as discharge summaries, psychiatric evaluations, ancillary services, treatment planning conferences, physician and psychologist billing services.

Locate, retrieve, and file HEALTH RECORDs and documentation in all record storage areas. Maintain and purge files/documents in all archive areas. Process HEALTH RECORDs for admission, transfer or discharge.

Maintain assigned filing areas in correct filing order for easy retrieval and access of HEALTH RECORDs. Assemble HEALTH RECORDs as a unit record; all prior admissions brought forward and filed under the new hospital admission number.

Department Information

Opened in 1916, DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital is in the vibrant community of Norwalk,15 miles east of Los Angeles. To the south are entertainment venues like Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, the marinas and beaches of Huntington, Newport and Laguna. To the west are Palos Verdes and Marina Del Rey.

DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital has an open campus within a security perimeter. The hospital operates approximately 826 beds. The commitment categories of patients treated at DSH-Metropolitan: Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act, Incompetent to Stand Trial (PC 1370), Offenders with Mental Health Disorders (Penal Code Section 2964/2972/2974), Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (PC 1026).

Minimum Qualifications- Additional Information

Applicants that believe they meet the Minimum Qualifications based on pattern II of education from classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of your diploma/degree, unofficial transcripts, and/or certificate of completion along with your application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position. Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment.

Training and Development Assignment-Additional Information

Training and Development (T&D) assignments may be considered for this position for current California civil service employees. T&D assignments are temporary assignments of up to 24 months made for the purposes of providing career advancement opportunities to prepare permanent civil service employees for future promotions into new occupational fields.

T&D assignments cannot exceed 24 months. However, successful T&D candidates may transition to a permanent appointment, if eligible at the end of the T&D assignment. Applicants interested in applying for a T&D Assignment must have permanent status in their present classification.

To ensure that your application will be considered for a T&D assignment in this recruitment, you must complete the STD 678 employment application in its entirety and include “Training & Development” in the “Examination(s) or Job Title(s), For Which You Are Applying” section of the application.
