Job description

Summary

The Health Educator works with provider teams, other Neighborcare Health staff, and community partners to prevent unintended pregnancy, improve sexual health outcomes for patients and expand Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) knowledge and use in High Schools where Neighborcare Health provides school based health services, as well as at our 45 St. Youth Clinic. Activities include developing and maintaining school and community partnerships, identifying patient education and training materials, facilitating groups for sexual health education, and provide contraceptive counseling, LARC support, and follow-up. The HE must work in partnership and joint accountability with other team members to achieve Neighborcare Health’s Mission, Guiding Principles and Goals.

Primary Responsibilities

    • Expand the number of youth aware of LARC options, indications, risks and benefits, and work to increase the number of youth aware of and choosing LARC insertions.; Disseminate and present information to various parties (families, school staff, case managers, shelter employees) about the availability of LARCs and the health benefits beyond pregnancy prevention.
    • Develop high quality, factually accurate and linguistically sensitive health materials for youth and adults; Plan, facilitate, and delivers sexual health promotion activities, targeting those who have experienced migration, trauma, poverty, or other barriers for accessing health services. Implement linguistically and culturally relevant materials, intervention systems and translation services.
    • Develop peer mentors who can accurately and without bias support pregnancy prevention activities, link youth for services, and discuss current recommendations for the use of LARCs in adolescents; Screen for health & behavior risk factors that contribute to early pregnancy and unreliable contraceptive use; partner with clinicians to provide contraceptive counseling, LARC support, and follow-up.
    • Work with site staff and clinicians to develop referral and integration systems to identify and provide health education services to students that could benefit from additional support; Provide accountability by helping develop and maintain regular reports on educational activities, data, feedback, and outreach.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge of sexual health and contraceptive options, optimize adolescent and adult learning skills, and actively address opportunities for improvement.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    Required: 
    Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Public Health, or related field
    License/Registration/Certification
    Required:
    Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance
    Preferred: 
    Certified Health Educator

    Key Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

    • Knowledge and understanding of the sexual health services available throughout Neighborcare Health; Knowledge and understanding of Washington State confidentiality and consent regulations for adolescent health services.
    • Knowledge of community resources, including insurance and Medicaid eligibility requirements; Knowledge of and proficient in the use of Excel, Word, and Outlook
    • Knowledge of cultural and social determinants of health, and specifically sexual health; Ability to organize data, calendars, monthly reports, and feedback on activities; Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures.
    • Ability to willingly accept responsibility, organize and problem solve, and follow-up on tasks; Ability to analyze patient care data; Ability to listen actively and respond to patients, school staff, parents, and staff members in a timely, competent manner both verbally and non-verbally.
    • Ability to adapt to the needs of our patients and clinics; Ability to manage projects with critical deadlines and goals; Ability to effectively perform job duties under a high level of activity, difficult people, and a variety of conditions and restraints.
    • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and to complete assigned tasks; Ability to be detail oriented and multi-task; Ability to read, write and communicate in English and understand basic math.
    • Ability to learn from directions, observations and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment; Ability to work with supervision, receiving instructions/feedback, coaching/counseling and or action/discipline.
    • Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable and timely attendance; ability to be reliable and punctual; Ability to consistently demonstrate trustworthiness and respectful behavior; Skill in oral, written and interpersonal communication; Skill in time management
    • Experience working with youth and working in a school.
    • Understanding of Seattle’s homeless population, especially homeless youth.
    • Experience in a healthcare setting; Bilingual

    Compensation 

    • The wage range for this position is minimum $22.84 up to $29.76 maximum.  
    • Compensation will be determined based on years of relevant experience.
