Health Educator I Women’s Health – CPSP/ANKH

Department: Women’s Health Education

Reports to:  Health Education Program Manager

Status: Full-time/Part-time/Temporary

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Health Educator I will be responsible for providing health information, education and referrals for any WellSpace Health patient. The Health Educator I will promote and encourage healthy pregnancies and positive birth outcomes through one on one or group education classes. They also will provide and assist in linkage to resources as identified and determined by the team to benefit the patient and their family for a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period.

 

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum one year of full-time OB-GYN experience either as a Front desk or Medical Assistant.
  • Obtain CPHW certification from the State of CA within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained within the first (90) ninety days of employment.
  • Able to conduct and facilitate one on one or group classes.
  • Strong administrative skills with attention to detail.
  • Efficient time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and organizational needs.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and demonstrate a high level of listening skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service experience including active listening, problem solving, and the ability to remain calm in emotional or stressful situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships.
  • Computer (PC) literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook email and database software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the provision of services for the underserved and sensitivity working with a variety of people from low-income populations, with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, HIV (AIDS) infected, and/or physiologically impaired.
  • Fluency in additional languages is preferred.
  • Commitment to HIPAA and ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Encourage patient’s general well-being throughout pregnancy and postpartum with health promotion.
  • Collaborate with OB/GYN providers to maintain patient's medical care, as appropriate.
  • Keep accurate records of CPSP intake and reassessments during pregnancy.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations of basic health education programs, protocols, and standards.
  • Coordinate a wide range of health education services, including establishing effective referrals and publicity systems, monitoring quality and documentation, providing scheduling and logistical support, and facilitating the use of community services to promote the delivery of health education services.
  • Implement and manage health education strategies, interventions and programs.
  • Provide direct group or one on one health education services to patients and their families.
  • Assist patients with self-management care.
  • Reviews, develops and recommends high quality, culturally appropriate written and audio-visual health education materials.
  • Consult with physicians and staff regarding related health education services.
  • Specialize in a specific area of health education (e.g. nutrition, psychosocial, health education) as required.
  • Travel to service locations as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach.  The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.   The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

 

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care.  The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
