Job Title:Health Educator (Evening Hours) - SSP
Job Summary:
Outreach, education, individual and group counseling, mentoring and follow-up services to women, including formerly incarcerated women, transgender women and sex workers in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Deep understanding of and commitment to harm reduction theory and practice. Must demonstrate a commitment to advocacy and activism, particularly in the crises of HIV/AIDS, homelessness and drug policy.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct Syringe exchange program enrollment, including review of participant’s drug use history and practice.
- Providing safer substance use education to people who use drugs.
- Provide low-threshold counseling and referrals for a variety of service needs.
- Providing prevention education, counseling, and safer substance use education to program members.
- Conduct Syringe exchange transactions within agency’s drop-in center.
- Facilitate educational and support groups.
- Act as a point person for providing information on medication assisted treatment for people who use opiates.
- Conduct referrals to people who are using opiates to the SAMSHA MAT buprenorphine services program.
- Educate people who inject drugs on safer syringe disposal practices.
- Preparation, packing and inventory of syringes and related program supplies.
- Distribution of prevention supplies, condoms, drug testing strips, and safer smoking kits, one- hit -kits, etc.
- Responsible for ensuring medical waste is handled properly, packed and stored in a designated area.
- Assist in monitoring the inventory and ordering of harm reduction supplies.
- Ability to respond immediately to an overdose situation with administration of naloxone (NARCAN) medication whenever necessary.
Qualifications/Criteria:
- Minimum of one year experience providing harm reduction counseling.
- Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
- Basic understanding of harm reduction theory and practice.
- Basic knowledge and ability to discuss safer drug user strategies and safer sex options to program members.
- Basic knowledge of infectious disease transmission, HIV, and Hepatitis C and the coronavirus.
- Good communication skills are a must.
- Collection of disposed of syringes found in the community for placement into appropriate medical waste containers for medical waste disposal.
- Participate in the receiving of program supplies, deliveries.
- Participate in the proper stocking of SSP supplies and materials.
- Basic computer skills, including experience with MS Word and MS Outlook.
- Ability to collect data and document services on appropriate organizational forms.
- Training in HIV 101, Peer Education/Advocacy, HIV treatment is preferred but not necessary.
- Develop knowledge of infectious disease transmission and prevention practices for injectors (HIV, Hepatitis C, Opiate Overdose Prevention, health education, outreach strategies, harm reduction theory and practice).
- Must attend scheduled training by New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute-Harm Reduction Unit on Needle Stick and Law Enforcement.
- Available to work flexible schedule, including afternoons, evening and weekend rotations on occasion.
- Physically able to climb stairs, move and lift boxes and supply packs weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
