Summary:
- The Contractor will provide public health communication and writer/editor expertise to integrate recommendations and/or Health Communications into vision and eye health programs.
- Assist, guide and support communication, creative services, subject matter experts, partners, and other public health staff and/or grantees.
- Development of website materials, content, graphic design, delivering consistent messages, and dissemination of electronic tools and training in support of strategic priorities.
- Write and edit public health content for diverse website audiences; create, populate, and sustain the VHI Website including the static pages and the interactive data tools.
- Launch and grow new Facebook and Twitter social media accounts. Develop communication products, promotional materials, curricula, and other resources.
- Review and edit program, policy and/or scientific content to ensure proper format, grammar, style, and tone; create videos, build and test interactive graphics, and electronic tools and training as specified by CDC.
- Assist in driving strategy and execution of marketing communications and public relations initiatives; and keep abreast of and share best practices for applying health communication science.
- Develop creative briefs; fact sheets on vision loss and major eye diseases among children and adults; talking points, message maps, Q & A’s, fact sheets, PowerPoints, etc.
- Coordinate response to media inquiries; Analyze and segment target audiences; organize expert panels meeting to review and forecast future projects relevant to the mission and goal of VHI.
- Work closely with the communication team to disseminate promotional information.
- Communicate with internal and external partners to increase and sustain the visibility of the Vision Health Initiative.
- Assist with branch projects reaching vulnerable populations through effective work with other public health professionals, community-based organizations, academic institutions, other divisions and centers at CDC, and other government agencies to achieve overall objectives.
- Work with branch scientists to draft manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals to disseminate key findings from branch’s surveillance efforts, public health research, and health services research.
- Provide monthly written updates on the status of assigned actions.
- Participate in staff conference calls. Travel:
- Domestic travel will be required for the Health Communication and Writer/Editor positions. Up to two trips, for a maximum of 3 days each to attend national program meetings and two trainings is expected.

- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Health Education, Public Health, or related field OR a master’s degree in a related field with 2 years of related experience, or high school diploma/equivalent with at least 8 years of related and demonstrated work experience.
- Minimum four (4) or more years of experience writing and editing in Health Communications or Public Health Education.
- Must have experience with current 508 compliance requirements and Clear Communication Index.
- Ability to obtain and maintain CDC Public Trust Clearance.
- Master’s degree Communications, English, Health Education, Public Health, or related field.
- Previous experience hands-on experience in diabetes or chronic diseases.
- Prior experience working with the CDC is highly desired to understand the culture and environment.
