Primary Purpose

  • Assist with vision and hearing screening and related tasks, such as recording results.
  • Weigh and measure students.
  • Assist with preparation for health activities, such as screenings, immunizations, and so forth.
  • Administer medications and treatments as delegated by the school nurse, after having received the required training.
  • Report major health concerns to the supervising school nurse and/or school administrator within appropriate time limits.
  • Provide first aid care to students with minor injuries.
  • Follow guidelines contained in First Aid Flipchart for School Emergencies.
  • Report all illnesses and injuries to the school nurse for professional review, care and/or follow-up.
  • Contact parents of ill or injured children. 10. Maintain confidentiality on student information.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and attractive health office/clinic.
  • Attend on-going in-service education programs.
  • Record health information (e.g., results of various screening tests, immunization information, and so forth).
  • Maintain an up-to-date master file of student health emergency information and so forth.
  • Provide on-going communication to the school nurse regarding the status of health notices.
  • Distribute information, forms, and so forth, to teachers and administrative staff.
  • Develop computer skills as needed. Initiate and distribute incident and accident reports according to school Division policy.
Additional Duties
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of school clinic.

Equipment
  • Uses standard office equipment such as stethoscope, first aid kit, eye chart, themometor, transport chair, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong foundation in physical assessment and first aid and emergency care
  • A solid skill base and understanding of pediatric medicine
  • General experience with children
  • Knowledge of developmental stages is very important in order to provide age-appropriate care
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to assess and determine the health care needs of the children and their families
  • Computer skills to chart and track students' records and immunization status
  • Ability to relate to children and communicate with patients and the school community
  • Ability to provide health education
  • Responsible for medication management of children while they are in school
  • Skills to participate as a member of a multidisciplinary education team and collaborate with other members of the educational environment
  • Ability to provide care for minor ailments such as a scraped knee as well as potentially serious conditions such as an allergic reaction or a major injury
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all the children in the school
  • Ability to deal with issues such as school violence, suicide, and unwanted teen pregnancies
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer, examine patient
  • See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels, indoors, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly indoors, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physically able to occasionally lift, push, pull, carry, and/or move patients and equipment weighing up to 125 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to adjust focus for observing patient conditions and administering appropriate treatment.
  • The job risks exposure to disease/pathogens; blood and bodily fluids; medications; and toxic or caustic chemicals.

Qualification Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • Graduate of an accredited program of nursing
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse preferred or a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia Board of Nursing preferred
  • Two (2) years successful work experience and experience in community health, pediatrics, emergency care and triage, psychiatry, and/or a physician's office preferred
FLSA Status: Non-exempt 10- Month Position Part-Time 5.5 Hours/Day
