Overview
The Division of Environmental Health at the Vermont Department of Health has an exciting opportunity for a professional interested in protecting public health. We are looking for a well-organized person skilled at communicating clearly who wants to ensure Vermonters live, work, learn, and play in healthy environments.
This position will support the Division of Environmental Health's Asbestos and Lead Regulatory Program team in a variety of ways including communicating with the public about safe asbestos and lead work practices and performing worksite inspections. Lead and asbestos are highly toxic compounds both with serious but preventable health effects. This is a dynamic position that includes both desk and field work and collaboration with state and local officials and the building industry. This position will work under the general supervision of the Asbestos and Lead Program Manager. We will provide the training you need on the topics of asbestos and lead.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
• Perform worksite inspections
• Assist contractors with understanding the lead and asbestos regulations and performing safe work practices safe
• Respond to requests for information from the public about lead and asbestos hazards
• Assist with the development of educational materials

VDH Relocation Statement: The VDH Central Office in Burlington will be relocating to the Waterbury State Office Complex. Although we do not know how long moving the central office will take, we want to be transparent in our recruitment efforts so applicants can plan accordingly. Who May Apply
This position, Health Asbestos and Lead Inspector - Limited Service (Job Requisition #48448), is open to all State employees and external applicants. It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in office settings and in the field. Private means of transportation must be available for field work. Duties will not always conform to a normal workday or workweek. Incumbents may be required to use personal protective equipment to perform some job duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with coursework in a physical or biological science, engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental health, public health, air quality, or architecture.
OR
Associate's degree and one (1) year or more of experience in engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental health, public health, air quality, or architecture.
OR
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental health, public health, air quality or architect
Special Requirements
Must be Vermont certified or able to be certified in asbestos and lead consultant and contractor categories. Must be physically able to wear a respirator.
