WORK DAYS/HOURS:
June - July
M/W 7:45am - 11:15am
T/TH 5:15pm - 8:45pm
Saturdays 7:00 am - 3:00pm
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and supervises a program to teach fundamentals of the Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA) track and field program to participants 5-18 years of age
Positions in this class are flexibly linked and are normally filled by advancement from Assistant Youth Coach or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.
This is the journey-level class in the Assistant Youth Coach/Youth Coach series. Incumbents entering this class have previous directly related work experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Designs and implements drills for practices, workouts and training.
Sets up and takes down equipment as needed.
Monitors participant attendance against rosters to ensure all payments are received.
Instructs sport relevant skills to participants of various ability levels.
Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
Identifies and reports any hazards.
Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
Responds to emergency situations as required; maintains and forwards accurate accident and incident reports to supervisor.
Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.
Attends trainings and meetings as required.
Complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
May coordinate weekly matches for track participants.
May collect and forward entry forms and birth certificates.
May be required to work weekends and holidays.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Requires one season of experience as a participant or coach in track and field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. College level experience in track and field, either playing or coaching is preferred.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire.
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of the sports of track, cross-country, swimming, soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, softball, or football.
Knowledge of coaching the specific sport they are teaching to participants of all abilities.
Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
Skill in instructing and demonstrating fundamental sports skills to participants of all abilities.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting, and is regularly required to stand and walk around for up to eight hours per day. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions, and may be exposed to various environmental weather conditions including being in the sun and heat for up to eight hours per day, several days each week. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
