GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Head of Access Services is responsible for supervising and leading Access Services operations involving staff, systems and stacks, as well as ensuring effective day-to-day functions and ongoing development of the department in order to provide access to the library's resources and services in support of the University's mission to "provide distinctive and relevant education in an environment of scientific, technological, and professional knowledge creation and innovation". The Head of Access Services will provide oversight, management, and development of Galvin Library's Group Study Suites, Interlibrary Loan Services, and reserves collections both print and digital. As well as leading the department in setting goals, objectives, and priorities consistent with the Library's strategic plan, the Head of Access Services will participate in a variety of exciting library initiatives and professional development opportunities in support of Illinois Tech's growth and innovation.
COMMUNICATIONS
Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary. Position interacts internally with faculty, students, and staff of Illinois Tech, as well as across Galvin Library departments. Position interacts externally with consortium, library, and university partners, and with members of the public and community users. Works cooperatively with staff at all Illinois Tech Libraries and participates in working groups and committees as necessary. Promotes Galvin Library to its internal constituency and to its external university partners.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Position resolves disputes and interacts internally with faculty, students, and staff of IIT, as well as Galvin Library departments. Position interacts externally with consortium, library, and university partners, as well as with members of the public and community users. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patrons, library and university departments, and consortium partners. Fosters customer service orientation and training among student employees.

May include evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited graduate program within three years of appointment.
Three years of supervisory experience in any setting.
Experience in at least one of the following: Circulation, Document Delivery, or Interlibrary Loan (student or paraprofessional experience is acceptable but some professional supervisory experience is preferred). Experience with or knowledge of integrated library systems.
Knowledge & Skills

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY
Supervises Access Services Specialists (non-exempt), Interlibrary Loan Specialist I (non-exempt),
Interlibrary Loan Specialist II (non-exempt), and part-time or temporary employees as applicable. Oversees a department with 35-40 student employees. Annual student hours support library operation and services. This position does not have budget authority.
Physical Environment and Requirements
Academic library, exposure to dust in stacks, collections and storage areas. Position requires standing and walking up to 50% of each day. Needs to be able to lift or manipulate up to 25 lbs. for moving journals, books, or boxes of materials.

Ensures smooth operation of circulation functions by hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising staff and student assistants. Supervises department staff of circulation and InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Manages activities and staffing related to ILL/Document Delivery, Circulation, stack maintenance, the Group Study Suite, and the Reserves collection. Promotes staff development opportunities.

Key Responsibility
Serves as the primary contact and liaison between the University Virtual Bookstore vendor and Main campus faculty, overseeing textbook list and reserve collection management. Develops, implements, and properly communicates circulation policies. Supervises circulation desk activities. Resolves patron circulation issues and assists in the resolution of building and resource access issues.

Key Responsibility
Coordinates and ensures the provision of quality collection services with other library service units, including Technical Services, Library Systems & Web Services, and the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement. Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of short and long term projects and actively participates in library committees and task forces.

Compiles data, manages reporting statistics for the circulation system and gate counts, and prepares reports. Maintains financial records including student payroll, administration of fines/ replacement fees and recording of problem accounts.
