General Description
The Head Lifeguard is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Lifeguards in order to maintain the standards or the City of Madison Aquatics Division. They are responsible for the operation of Goodman Pool when an Aquatic Supervisor is not on site. They report directly to the Aquatic Supervisors, Aquatic and Parks Program Coordinator, and or the Recreation Services Coordinator. This position requires general knowledge of aquatic operations and how to implement them. The Head Lifeguard exercises judgement in resolving conflicts and responding to emergencies.
Current recruitment is to fill five (4) vacant positions.
Hours: Hours of work vary based on seasonal needs. During the peak season of June to August, the Head Lifeguard will work 40 hours per week. Hours worked in preparation for the summer season and season closing will be reduced. This position works early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The Goodman Pool will be staffed from 5:45am to 8:30pm Monday - Thursday, 5:45am to 7:30pm on Fridays, and 7:45am to 7:30pm on Saturday and Sundays. There will always be a Head Lifeguard at the pool from open until close.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Pre and post season cleaning, trainings, and meetings
- Set up daily lifeguard rotations
- Respond to a variety of emergencies
- Respond to request from lifeguards
- Check on lifeguards and attendants on a frequent basis
- Administer first aid and or summon EMS as needed
- Delegate jobs as appropriate
- Keep restrooms fully stocked
- Communicate any updates or concerns to the Aquatic Management Team
- Attend weekly Head Lifeguard meetings
- Attend and help instruct weekly in-service trainings
- Maintain facility readiness and cleanliness
- Lifeguard as needed
- Perform Vigilance Awareness Tests on lifeguards
- Learn proper cash handling procedures
- Manage customer services issues
- Beach cleaning
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- One (1) season of experience as a City of Madison Lifeguard
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification

Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Must be 18 years old by your first shift
- Attend a minimum of 4 hours of in-service training each month during the summer season
- Swim 200 yards, tread water without the use of hand for two (2) minutes, and retrieve a 10 pound brick from deep water.
