Job description

OPEN UNTIL FILLED. This is a Regular, 8 hour/day position and will begin immediately. Work hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Initial screening of indistrict applications will begin on October 10, 2022. Screening of external applications, if needed, will begin the following week.

We may fill more than one Head Custodian vacancy from this posting, at either the Head Custodian I, Head Custodian II or Head Custodian III level. Pay will depend on the position being filled.

These are full time, year-round position includes a comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental, vision and disability insurance, retirement contributions, 10 days of vacation after one year, 12 days of sick leave per school year, and 11 paid holidays per school year.

Job Purpose Statement: The job of "Head Custodian III" is done for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events at Hood River Valley High School; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; and directing assigned custodians as necessary. This position provides lead direction to several other Custodial employees at Hood River Valley High School. The Head Custodian III is supervised by the Operations Director.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events (i.e., regular school, community education, special events).
  • Cleans school facilities (i.e. classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, windows, restrooms, sinks, carpets, floors, garbage cans, waste cans, gym, cafeteria, and other areas as directed) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment
  • Delivers variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture) for the purpose of distributing the materials to the appropriate parties
  • Directs personnel as assigned for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce and meeting shift requirements
  • Informs principal, supervisor, other site personnel and students for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities
  • Procures equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site (i.e., unlock & lock doors, secure gates, check windows, turn lights off/on; operate heating plant and equipment)

Other Job Functions:
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Repairs furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition
  • Requests custodial supplies, equipment and other items needed for the purpose of safety and maintenance of facilities, supplies and inventory.
  • Maintains grounds and operates equipment as required (i.e., floor polishers, vacuums, carpet cleaners, floor strippers, waxers, lawnmowers, edgers, snow equipment, and hand and power tools.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Experience Required: Three years' prior job related experience with increasing levels of responsibilities, preferably in a school or institutional setting; experience providing lead direction to other employees.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
  • Skills to use cleaning agents; supplies and equipment; perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents. Possess basic computer and technology skills to be able to communicate with staff and to perform the essential functions of this position. Possess basic math skills. Strong communication skills and possess the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, both verbally and in written form.
  • Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment, and supplies, safe work practices.
  • Abilities to stand for prolonged periods, follow oral and written instructions, adhere to safe work practices, work independently with minimal supervision, perform a variety of tasks, adjust to flexible assignments often with short notice, and communicate effectively and respectfully with students, staff, parents and patrons. Maintain satisfactory and predictable attendance. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping, reaching/handling, near/far visual acuity/depth perception.
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish helpful but not required.

Education Required: High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance; may be required to complete district required pre-employment/post offer drug screen and post offer physical assessment; possess a valid driver's license; asbestos training. Must provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination or qualify for an exception.

The 2022/23 hourly pay range is listed below. Classified employees who pass the bilingual exam can earn an additional 5% per hour, and will make their bilingual skills available to the District, as requested. Head Custodian I begins at $17.35/hour; Head Custodian II begins at $18.23/hour; Head Custodian III begins at $20.38/hour.
