TITLE: HEAD CUSTODIAN
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. This individual will be expected to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  2. This individual will be expected to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with other staff in a leadership role.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This person, working with the Night Custodians, Principal, Maintenance and Grounds Personnel will be responsible for providing staff assistance, cleaning activities, security and minor maintenance for selected areas of the building and grounds.
PHYSICAL FUNCTION:
  1. Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  2. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
  3. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
  4. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Consult with the Building Principal on matters of supplies, building repairs, equipment, and support staff.
  2. Keep a current file on job policies, inventory records, and needed repairs.
  3. Assist in the planning, organization, work scheduling, and leading of a custodial crew in cleaning and maintaining a school building.
  4. Provide technical input into the performance evaluation of custodial personnel.
  5. Requisitions supplies, materials, and equipment to ensure that an appropriate operational inventory is maintained.
  6. Assist custodial personnel in resolving unusual problems and situations.
  7. Perform routine facility and equipment maintenance functions, including minor repair, part replacement, and adjustment tasks.
  8. Assist roving maintenance personnel.
  9. Housekeeping activities to include sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, washing, and cleaning walls, ceilings, woodwork, lockers, floors (tile and carpet), windows, furniture, light fixtures, drinking fountains, chalkboards, pencil sharpeners, etc.; included would be the application of sealers, waxes, polishes, and disinfectants.
  10. Light maintenance of any item, which can be fixed, replaced and maintained by a screwdriver, hammer, pliers, and crescent wrench, etc. Activities would also include assembly, replacing, repairing, painting, and covering. These functions relate to furniture, equipment, doors, switch plates, receptacles, dispensers and toilet lids, squeegees, hoses, batteries and other equipment used by custodians during the usual course of duties.
  11. Safety and security measures of the building and grounds checks and reporting to superiors any unsafe and hazardous conditions or any breaking/trespassing situations by unauthorized individuals. Some of these functions would include locking/unlocking doors, windows, gates, checking fire extinguishers and fire alarms, checking air handling equipment, participating in disaster drills, determining what lights need to be off or on and generally securing the building. An additional activity would be snow removal at the entrance areas and spreading ice melt on sidewalks if needed.
  12. General staff assistance services which include moving furniture and equipment; special "set-ups" and "take-downs" for extra-curricular activities and classroom use; assisting students with the opening and closing of malfunctioning lockers, assisting teachers with any special needs that will accommodate their individual efforts, set controls for air handling units.
  13. Boiler maintenance responsibilities to include operating heating and ventilating controls; assisting in annual boiler cleaning and preparation for inspections; cleaning filters and oiling valves, motors, fans, and uni-vents; making minor adjustments to thermostats. This person will keep accurate records of preventative boiler maintenance.
  14. Attendance mandatory.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The board shall offer a letter of agreement with wages and benefits to be determined as delineated in the classified employee handbook subject to the approval of the superintendent or his/her designee and the school board. Hours and time schedules to be determined by the business manager with the approval of the superintendent.
