Job description

The primary responsibility of the Head Cook is to coordinate all aspects of the camp kitchen as an integrated part of life at camp. The Head Cook ensures professional standards for health and cleanliness standards are upheld. They motivate staff to work professionally and creatively in the kitchen. The Head Cook is an instrumental part of a successful summer by creating a cheerful and engaging kitchen environment while producing healthy and enjoyable food.

Essential Functions:

  • Create a menu with the goal of providing health and familiar food to campers, and that supports the different dietary restrictions for vegans, gluten-free and dairy-free and nut allergies.
  • Ensure the kitchen and dining room meet and potentially exceeds American Camping Association and Vermont State standards for health and safety.
  • Work with Director to ensure kitchen staff are well-managed and integrated in camp life. Create and maintain records of shifts worked. Schedule time in regular camp program & coverage for all cooks.
  • Supervise the daily removal of trash, recycling, and compost from the kitchen.
  • Order from vendors, such as Black River Produce, to assure timely delivery of necessary food to camp while respecting the food supply budget

Camps Overview

We hire Kitchen staff at the following camps: Timberlake, Tamarack Farm, Firefly Song, Saltash Mountain Camp. To learn more about each camp visit our website. If you are not sure of which camp is right for you, you can still apply, and we’ll help you decide.

Work Conditions

  • Work shifts consist of 6 days on, 1 day off
  • Due to the meal schedule, some early mornings are required
  • Live in a three-sided open-air cabin/tent that is RUSTIC and does not have electricity.
  • Toilets are composting outhouses
  • Food and beverages are provided through our camp kitchens
  • Alcohol and drugs (including tobacco) are prohibited on camp property

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experienced cook and food service specialist; knowledge of the ordering, coordination, and management (safety, etc) for foods/meals in a summer camp setting
  • Possess strength and endurance required throughout the summer
  • Professional character that is consistent, capable, self-directed, well organized, flexible, personable, and is able to maintain composure in a changing environment
  • Openness to work with people (both staff and campers) from diverse backgrounds (e.g. economic, racial, religious, political, geographical, sexual orientation, cultural)
  • Respectful, clear, and patient interpersonal communication skill set that allows for collaborative work as part of a community or team. A sense of humor and appreciation of fun and spontaneity
