Position Summary
Lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for caring, observing and maintaining a variety of fish and aquatic life within the City zoo; provide responsible assistance to the Aquarium Manager; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in marine biology; and
Four (4) years of aquarium operations experience; and
To include one (1) year of lead experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of a valid SCUBA Diving certificate.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Operations, services and activities of an aquatic program
  • Principles of lead supervision and training
  • Anatomy, physiology and behavior of fish and invertebrates
  • Principles and practices of SCUBA Diving
  • Safe work practices utilized when working with fish and various aquatic life

Preferred Skills & Abilities
  • Lead, organize and review the work of staff
  • Interpret, explain and enforce department policies and procedures
  • Maintain and care for a variety of fish within the assigned area
  • Clean and maintain aquariums
  • Prepare diets and feed fish according to established guidelines
  • Identify unusual fish behavior
  • Observe and detect unusual animal behaviors
  • Maintain accurate records on fish behavior
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties
