What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the ESH Professional 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
ESH Professional 2 $90,000 - $147,100
Work with the Office of the Chief Electrical Safety Officer to support and provide leadership to implement and continuously improve the LANL Electrical Safety Program, Lockout/Tagout for Hazardous Energy Control (LO/TO) Program, and other associated safety programs within the Occupational Safety and Health Division. The ESH Professional will assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of these programs, systems and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees who could be exposed to Hazardous Energy.
Leadership roles include:

  • Oversight of the programs to ensure consistent implementation.
  • Developing and maintaining policies, procedures, forms, guidance documents, and tools.
  • Evaluating metrics and incident/investigation data trends to anticipate and identify potential issues and provide early intervention strategies to LANL management to prevent event/injuries and implement methods to improve program performance.
  • Assessing training methodolies, effectiveness of training, training priorities, and instructors to ensure technical coordination and integration of training with program needs.
  • Ensuring that facility operators, managers, workers, and contractor's safety needs are being met with effective electrical safety and LO/TO solutions, including support tools, information, and training.
  • Baselining LANL programs with other DOE laboratory programs to incorporate best practices and support continuous program improvement.

ESH Professional 3 $109,100 - $182,000
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the ESH Professional will be expected to perform the leadership roles identified above without considerable direction from the Chief/Deputy Chief Electrical Safety Officer and may be utilized to coordinate activities amongst Electrical Safety Officers, Electrical Safety Committee Members, Lock Coordinators, and/or LO/TO Committee Members.


What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Working knowledge of and experience with a broad range of Hazardous Energy work hazards and associated Hazardous Energy Control methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with Hazardous Energy related risk assessments and application of controls per the hierarchy of controls.
  • Working knowledge of Hazardous Energy federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag- out policies and procedures.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting the control of Hazardous Energy.Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of Hazardous Energy Control to both technical and non-technical personnel.
Additional Job Requirements for ESH Professional 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with a broad range of hazardous energy work hazards and associated Hazardous Energy Control methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with Hazardous Energy related risk assessments and application of controls per the heirarchy of controls.
  • Advanced knowledge of Hazardous Energy federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with successful risk assessments, corrective actions, and/or issues management.
  • Advanced knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag out policies and procedures.
  • Extensive advanced experience with problem-solving activities, including conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and documenting and recommending solutions.
  • Advanced ability to conceptualize and communicate elements of ESHQ to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expert, demonstrable experience using data to influence fact-based decision making processes.
  • Expert knowledge of the Laboratory's integrated safety management policies, practices and procedures.
  • Expert knowledge of the Laboratory's electrical safety and/or LO/TO policies, practices and procedures.
  • Experience in developing training materials for workers exposed to Hazardous Energy.
Work Environment:
Work Location: Triad The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
