We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.
WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:
This project will focus on the changing weather and its impact on Cyanotoxin Production during the harmful algal boom (HAB) season in Southeast Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Drinking Water and Environmental Health Division (EGLE DWEHD) has accumulated several years of cyanotoxin incidence data at public water supply intakes, to assess the impact of HAB's on Michigan's drinking water sources.
The chosen intern will:
Responsibilities may be regional in some cases, rather than state-wide, allowing interns to focus on a section of the state near their home or school.
This internship is fully remote, however interns are expected to pick up and set up their EGLE issued equipment at a physical EGLE district office.
Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student's academic schedule and the needs of EGLE's Environmental Health and Safety Team
Students seeking academic credit for this internship experience must work with their academic institution and the internship supervisor to coordinate any required paperwork or project tracking requirements.
Internships are nonpaid experiences
Required Education and Experience
Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student's academic schedule and the needs of the department assigned.
Education
Current enrollment in a post-secondary education institution at a Junior or Senior level by fall of 2024
Actively pursuing a Bachelors degree in one of the following:
Environmental Engineering, Any Environmental Science, Statistics; GIS/Spatial Data Applications, Climate Science

- Utilize existing EGLE DWEHD data along with publicly available weather data, to potentially identify correlations between weather patterns and observed variations in the expression of select cyanotoxins associated with HAB.
- Apply this approach to multiple regions of the State including western Lake Erie, Little Bay de Noc and others.
