Overview
Hand Therapist- PT Sports & Ortho Westerville
The Hand Therapist is responsible for evaluating the functional status of pediatric and select adult hand and upper extremity injury patients, administering treatment, fabricating or recommending adaptive equipment and splints; documenting evaluation results and patient progress, in addition to collecting outcome data; and providing patient and family education. Demonstrates competence defined (*) in Hand Therapist responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care and services to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and potentially select adult patients.
Schedule: (Part Time, Exempt) This is approx 20hrs per week position. The Hand Therapist could be either a PT or an OT.

Responsibilities
  • The Hand Therapist supports, communicates, implements and enforces the philosophy, mission, values, standards, policies and procedures of Nationwide Children's Hospital.
  • *Evaluates patients with a variety of diagnoses, with an emphasis on hand and upper extremity (UE) function to determine functional status using standardized measures or clinical observations; identifies patient?s strengths and deficits; establishes long and short term goals; and develops an individualized treatment plan incorporating patient and family needs; collects outcomes data to contribute to evidence based care initiatives.
  • *Administers therapeutic treatment to patients with UE functional deficits to provide optimal function-including regaining range of motion, strength and functional independence; utilizes developmental activities and other treatment techniques to meet each patient's specific needs and achieve therapy goals; observes progress and/or changes in patient's condition and modifies treatment plan accordingly.
  • *Serves as a consultant in assigned clinics, providing necessary evaluations, recommendations for treatment/equipment and/or fabrication of custom splints or casts.
  • *Fabricates, recommends or provides adaptive equipment, customized pediatric splints or casts to maintain functional body joint positions, restrict muscle contractures, prevent deformities, and improve function or mobility. Fits patient and instructs patient and family on use of item.
  • *Educates parents on their child's treatment goals and therapy plan; instructs patients and parents on therapeutic activities to follow while in hospital or at home; documents instruction and evaluates ongoing compliance and understanding.
  • *Documents patient's evaluation results, objective status, progress towards goals, treatment plan, and recommendations in compliance with documentation requirements of the hospital and accrediting associations; utilizes appropriate computerized or standardized documentation methods, as applicable to caseload, contributing to collection of outcomes data..
  • *Communicates patient's status and collaborates with physicians, third-party payors, and relevant healthcare providers.
  • * Maintains the administrative functions of individual caseload, including scheduling patients for treatment, entering daily patient charges, and submitting timely documentation to appropriate parties.
  • * Recommends and secures patient referrals to community agencies to ensure patient continues to receive needed and appropriate services after discharge.
  • *Attends continuing education programs and participates in departmental in-service training programs to enhance professional development.
  • *Conducts formal and informal Occupational Therapy educational programs for hospital staff, students and community. Delegates to students from accredited programs, certified occupational therapist assistants (COTA), and unlicensed personnel, supervising care provided.
  • * Adheres to departmental productivity standards.
  • *Acts as a mentor, providing clinical instruction, supervision and guidance to other clinical staff.
  • *Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Education:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in occupational or physical therapy; certified by the American Occupational Therapy Association/American Physical Therapy Association; registered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy; licensed by the State of Ohio.

Preferred Experience:
  • CHT preferred, will consider CHT eligible
  • Minimum of two years Pediatric hand experience in a pediatric setting preferred or clinical affiliation in area of pediatrics.
  • CPR certification must be received no later than 60 days post hire or 60 days post expiration.
